  1. Hey, I have a Tab-Separated Text File which I want to import to a database that I just created in FileMaker Pro 15. The text file essentially is a log of events, for instance, one line describes an order, another line describes a payment that has been made. The problem is that I somehow need to import all these lines into different tables. I want all lines in the log file that describe a payment in a table called Payments, and all lines that describe an order in a table called Orders for example. I'm just starting out with FileMaker so forgive me if there is an obvious solution that I'm not aware of. I have a background in software development, so the only solution that I can think of is writing a small program myself that does all the parsing for me and creates separate text files that contain all the orders and payments and other events that have been logged in the file. Then I could simply import each file into the table I need all the data in. So to sum everything up, my main question is if there is a way to somehow parse the text file before importing it. I know that you can create custom scripts in FileMaker but I'm not sure if what I need to do can be done just with that. Thanks in advance, Mike
  2. I have been given the task of trying to import our postal information which we receive as XML files into Filemaker. I've been searching the forums for the last few days and I've found several examples which I've tried to build off, but I'm still not doing something right. We have no experience working with XML files so I can't quite figure out where I'm going wrong. When I try to import my XML file into Filemaker using the stylesheet I created, It looks like all the fields are mapping right, but I don't get data in any of the fields. I get the following pop up message: This is the stylesheet I have built so far, the sample XML data we were provided is attached. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as what my problem is and what I need to fix? As an aside, I know I have the CustomerReferenceID field importing twice.   3. Not sure if this is the relevant area however, I couldn't seem to find a scripting section What I would like to do and I have had no success so far is the following scenario. I have database which stores references to files in container field located on a folder on a shared computer. What I want to do is have a script which when run populates the database with the names of those files located in the folders on the computer and create a new record for those not already present and if they are already present ignore the import. I have tried a test script which gets the documents path and loops through each record however I get file unknown when debugging and that is as far as it goes. The script in no one handles the above scenario of omitting and inserting only new docs it was just a test to see if it was possible to import via this method. From what I can see the script is asking for a particular filename and if it can't be found it throws the error. That though is no good as essentially the filename is in a sense unknown at the time of import and that is what the purpose of the script would be i.e. too find those files and create a new record with reference only in a container. Documentation on this is either non existent or sparse and confusing to say the least (or at least that's how I find it) Any enlightenment would be appreciated.
  4. Over the past ten years our organization have been using a PO database solution to store all purchasing information. Each year the layout would change to illustrate which year it represents. We would like to merge each of these databases into one for better searching capabilities. Is there an easy way to accomplish this task while still maintaining data integrity? Thank you!

  6. Hi FMers, I'm trying to get multiple choice quiz questions into a FileMaker database. The information is in a plain text file. Question and options are simply separated by returns: Where in the cell is the genome located? Mostly in the cytosol. Mostly in the mitochondria. [X] Mostly in the nucleus. Stored in the membrane. Stored in RNA. Next question... Each question has 5 options, one of which is correct [X]. There's an empty line between questions. What's a good approach to get this into a FileMaker database with separate fields for the questions, the options, and the correct solution? All the best

Hi i created a certificate and want that when it is clicked to save it it gets created into a pdf and then imported into the cetification container field , however for some reason i am recieving some error in my script , the pdf does not save at all. see script below: i would appreciate if someone could tell me where i went wrong why my pdf is not saving and if this is the method to save the pdf to a container
  8. I have come across this technique severally on this forum, but I can't figure out how this really works. Right now I am faced with a situation that requires similar technique and I can't seem to get it work. I have Table A and Table B. 1. I want to script an import Process that will first export all records in Table A into Table B (kinda A Clone Copy of Table A) Thats just my basic objective 2. Then from there, I would want to be able to do similar Process but this time, I will only update the records in Table B with that of Table A using a match field. 3. I will also love to perform the process based on a found count. ie after performing a find of specific records I think If I can be guided on achieving NO. 1, then I can similarly script the others..
  9. Hi We have a database in Go 14 and users need to Import records from Filemaker Server 14, to Filemaker Go. And it runs very good with all Users that have: Ipad Air 2 and Ipad Pro Import time: 8 to 9 Minutes But all the users that have: Ipad 3rd and Ipad 4rd Generation Import time: + 1Hour Both using the same wireless, Is there any way I can identify in a script what Ipad Model the user has ?   10. Hi, I have a problem with server side import of records. I have a simple script which just does an import of a textile (with tab delimiters): Set Variable [$FileList; Value: "filewin://server/folder/1795739.txt"] Go to Layout ["files" (files)] Import Records [No dialog; "$FileList"; Add; UTF-8] When I run it client side, everything is fine. When I run it server side with Perform Script on Server I'm getting an error: The previous script step, "Perform Script on Server", could not be completed because of an error.... If I run Get ( LastError), I get error code 100 (File is missing) I have tried many different file locations for the textile. Network path, Local path (on the FM server) and Relative path (from where the database is placed on FM server). I have tried placing the file in the FM server Databases and Documents folder AND the User Documents folder: filewin://server/folder/1795739.txt filewin:/C:/Users/ARAXI/Documents/1795739.txt filewin:/C:/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Server/Data/Documents/1795739.txt filewin:/C:/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Server/Data/Databases/1795739.txt file:1795739.txt Every time I get error 100. What am I doing wrong?? FileMaker server is v14 on Windows Server 2008 and the client is running on Windows 7.
  11. I have been able to use the Import script step to import pictures from a folder. However, doing the same for bunch of pdf and word document files have not been a success. Is there any special trick to achieve this?

I have two tables Temporary and Real, the procedure is that contacts are created on the temporary table, probably by the contacts themselves. then once they have been confirmed as Clients (ie after their details have been verified by our staff), I would want to move them from the Temporary table to the Real table. Please how can I achieve this?
  13. I am trying to copy selected line item records from one table to another as part of an intended 'recurring transactions' structure. For some reason if I perform a find on line items for that transaction and attempt to import into the recurring line items table it wants to import all records (12000) and not the found set (1-20) as I would expect. I have just conducted some tests with other databases to confirm I have an issue with this database only. The test databases would only import the found set from table to table as expected. Is my db corrupt or is there some setting somewhere thats changes this behaviour? Any help would be appreciated. FM13.
  14. I have a simple contact solution with just a table. I need to import my contacts pictures from a folder. All pictures have been named using an ID, which matches the ID field on the contact table. Please how do Import these photos so as to match the ID field . I am familiar with importing from csv and excel files but not this one. Thanks.
  15. I am scripting the import of data into some 400 tables already established. I have the corresponding 400 seperate data files (excel cvs). The script step "import" doesn't seem to allow the selection of the "current table specified by the layout" as a target. I goto the different layouts right before the import but the import does not change to the table that is used by that layout. When writing the script I do select the "Current Table "mytable" " as the target, thinking that this would change during execution. Nope it don't. Soo, 1) Can I have a dynamic selection during script execution of target table for data imports. 2) How does FM select the table when doing an import. It seems that the choice is very explicit. 3) Recommendations on other ways to accomplish the task. Cheers
  16. Hi My scenario is, when I used to RUN a Import (Folder with Import only the reference) script from a iMac mini to remote Windows File server, it used to take 4-8 hours. But when started using the same script from Same server(Windows), it started to take more than 24 hours. Only things I have changed: Import from Windows FS ( Files of type Windows from OS X) Modified the Folder location to local server. Any suggestions or known issues.. Pls note: Previously we used Filemaker 10-11 now using 13-14 in both client server. The old Mac was OS X (10.5.8) with FM Advanced 10. And the old remote server was a Physical windows 2008 server with FM 10 server running as well as Fileserver to hold the files which where been imported as reference.

  18. It has been covered here but I really can't find a sufficient answer. When I do an automated import of an xlsx file that has no blank lines at the top into a portal that is part of a child relationship I keep getting blank lines. I've confirmed that there are no blank rows in the excel spreadsheet. For the particular import I'm talking about i get one blank line at the top (portal is not sorted in any way). I also get two blank lines at the bottom. I can almost understand the blank lines at the bottom (how does FM know when to stop?) but I cannot wrap my head around why I have one at the beginning
  19. In our database solution we have a table that holds other documents relating to the data. The enduser might insert a PDF or a JPG. So the table is made up of a container field, a job number (unique identifier). To view the file the user clicks in the container (script exports field contents and automatically opens). The thing we would like to do is when printing a job report if there are any "external documents", would like them to print as well. We want it be be part of the complete report. The container is setup for interactive content and start playback automatically. The script exports the container and imports it back in... on the Mac it produces the correct results, on the PC it prints as a pdf icon for example. Maybe what I want is not possible. Any suggestions.
  20. I have a client that would like to use MS Access to connect to a table in a solution hosted on FMS 14.0.3. What I'm reading suggests that was possible with .fmp5 and .fmp7 but is no longer available in .fm12. I've tried to use Access and both (mac) Excel and (windows) Excel to connect via ODBC to the FMS hosted table and I can construct the query and see the fields, but when I submit the request I get an error. Is it still possible to connect Excel or Access to FileMaker 14.0.3 (hosted)? The error I get appears on the attached screenshot. Is anyone currently doing this? Thank you in advance.
  21. I've spent the last couple of days learning XML, XPath, XSLT trying to make this work. I feel like I am really close but something simple is off. My XSLT is not quiet right and I need some expert input. For testing I set it up to only pull in the first field. Once I have that right the rest should be easy. Below I have added the XML, XSL, and Transformed XML. You can see in the transformer portion that there is something off with my data. When trying to import into FM it just creates a blank record. I am trying to import the "Y" from the "BTK-security-complete" field.   22. Hi, I'm looking for help with creating a script to transfer amended records into an audit log. For context I currently have a separate table that any amended fields move over to, how ever this works for one field at a time, but I'm running into problems when bulk importing a bunch of new records. When I import new records I get them to match up on one common field, the rest I want to record in the audit log but only if theres been a change. So far my script looks like this: This is just for one field and there are about ten I wish to audit log if theres been a change, naturally I can just repeat this part of the script and adjust accordingly. My problem is getting it to loop for every record. Obviously I want to set the variable for the old record for every and compare it before moving onto the next, but Im just unsure how to structure it and where to put my loops as if I loop the whole thing and use move to next record, it'll ask me to import new records each time it gets to that part of the script. So is there anyway to create a loop but get it to ignore the import records after the first loop? Or do I need to approach this differently? Kind Regards.
  23. I have a script that works correctly on a server machine when running within FileMaker Pro 13, but raises errors when run within FileMaker Server 13. Both are running under Windows. The portion that is raising the error is an `Import Record` script step that imports from one table within a file into another table within the same file. The error returned is 100, "File is missing," so I'm wondering if this is something not supported when running a script within FileMaker Server. If that's the case, I'm thinking that perhaps exporting the records to a temporary file and importing from that might be a workaround, but before I start down that road, I want to check and see if I'm missing something.
  24. Hi. Am a beginner, so please bear with me ... The purchaser of our products have gone EDI XML, and I would like to be able to extract some information from their order XMLs, into a FMP database. Have searched the net and found xslt templates that I have tried to tweak, but for some reason I am not getting any data into the FMP file ... only empty fields. Here is the source xml ordre_4500644900_20150925093113.xml - and here is an example (only testing a couple fields to see if it works) nytest2_header.xsl I am sure there is something very simple I am missing in the reference side of things. Hi there I've been banging my head all day, several days in fact, to create a sub summary report which can reuse records, have a part appear only once and allow me to assert more behaviour over the parts themselves. To complicate the matter it's in a crosstab format as well. I've seen on other posts that what developers do occasionally when preparing reports is to create a temp table of sorts to either store just what records are needed, or to store them in the way they're needed as well. The solution I have at the moment uses lots of summing up and calculations and is intolerably slow to load locally (10 seconds at worst) although it does give me what I need. I obviously want to improve this so ultimately a second table related to the parent with just what I want, just how I want it sounds good. At this point I will add I may have this completely wrong - apologies, it's an idea I'm throwing around! The whole reason I'm looking at this is because I cannot get my sub summary report to behave the way I need it, which may be a failing on my part, but it's a pretty complex report as I've said. So, in concept, is this whack or normal?
