  1. I am creating an app for a conference. Each seminar is assigned a code -- such as 101, 102, 103, etc. -- and the app will automatically create signage and displays for us. One of the services I want to provide is to tell people not only what seminar takes place right now, but which seminar will be *next up* in a particular ballroom. I have created a field called Next, into which we would enter the code for the seminar that takes place next, but that's as far as I have gotten. How do I automatically gather the information? For instance, let's say that Seminar 101 is entitled "How to Think," and is being led by John. Next up in that room is Seminar 103, entitled "How to be Great," led by Jane. I want to create a calculated field that would be part of 101's record that would automatically pick up title and speaker from 103's record. How would I do that??
  2. Update problems with FMPA15

    Wim, you rock! Many thanks...
  3. Update problems with FMPA15

Man, am I frustrated with the current update, which I am reminded about every few days when I start Filemaker. It asks me if I want to download, does not download the file to my designated Downloads folder, and then tells me that I must close Filemaker in order to proceed (see screen shot). When I close FM, the update stops of course, and I end up without my update. Three days later, this whole little scene plays out again. This is one of the more unintelligent updates I have encountered in my day. If I knew the filename and location of the update when it downloads, I could go get it myself, but I have not been able to find it on my own. Are others troubled by this? Anyone know how to work around this poorly-conceived update routine? Rick A. Pleasanton CA FMPA 15.0.1.119 Windows 10
  4. Mapping from cities or zip codes

Outstanding! Many thanks -- I'm on it...
  5. Mapping from cities or zip codes

I would like to know if it is possible to create viewable Google Map or Earth data from City/St or Zipcode information, but not street address. I don't need that level of precision and many of the records in our database do not contain street addresses; just cities and zips. I'd be fine with general blobs around geographical areas. I am using FMPA15 under Windows 10. Is this possible? Rick A. Pleasanton CA
  6. I have a field that receives a bunch of first names from a portal, thanks to the List function. The result might look like this: Alice, Bill, Chuck However, I need for the list to read: Alice, Bill, and Chuck I need to find the last comma in the text and add an "and" to it. I have been messing around with the Position function stuffed inside of a Substitute function, but I can't get it right. Can someone help? FMPA14 Rick A. Pleasanton CA
  7. Need a new relationship

Many thanks, Webko. I will give it a try.
  8. Need a new relationship

Thank you, webko. A few questions: How is this different/better than creating a self-join? My needs are simple enough that that route might get the job done. I would need to migrate the data from the Company field to the new table, yes? In the past, I have done that with a big ol' export/import procedure. What other fields would reside in the Company table?
  9. Need a new relationship

Hello, for our annual conference, our database is people-oriented: Our main table, PATRONS, tracks the people who attend and all of the relationships are established around the events that people attend and the things that people do.We create relationships to various other tables, such as ACTIVITIES, SEMINARS, and DEMOGRAPHICS. As you would expect, one of the fields in PATRONS is Company, and when we sign on a sponsor, there might be several people attending from that organization. That presents us with a challenge: for these purposes,Company becomes the central organizing unit (instead of Last Name), and we would like to be able to view and manipulate our records that way. I would like to create a relationship (and a layout) whereby the other fields could revolve around Company: where we could add a record in which first we add the Company, define its role in the conference, and then add the people who will be attending. The attached image shows two of our primary views: on the left shows the PATRONS table and on the right is the ACTIVITIES table. As you can see, Company is just one of the garden-variety fields in PATRONS. I'm good with scripts and calculations; less so with relationships, as I am unable to see them in my head. I would be grateful for some help in visualizing and creating the relationship(s) necessary to make this happen. Rick A. Pleasanton CA
