  1. We use our own app called Collector to manage our software development projects. A few years ago my colleague Milan started feeling the need to schedule our development capacity more precisely. So we created a detailed plan layout. In the following video you can see what the layout looked like and how we later optimized it using Web Viewer and JavaScript. In the first version of the layout, we used a list view with 31 filtered portals in the body part and another 31 portals in the footer to show summaries. That required FileMaker Pro to render 11 625 fields just for th
  2. We have recently released fmRESTor 19 along with a brief 8-minute step-by-step video on how you can use fmRESTor to add a webhook to your own FileMaker database. For the case you have not heard the term yet, webhook is usually defined as a “user-defined HTTP callback”. In plain English, it’s a web URL you can access and pass data to in order to perform some action in the target application. In the simplest form it’s just a link you can click and that alone performs the action. As an example, I took the built-in FileMaker starter solution for task management, and slightly
  3. On January 19, 2021 we met online for the second time to discuss my FileMaker performance lab testing results. For the case you either missed the meeting, or attended and want to recall some details, a recording of the meeting is now available... In the meeting I talked about the impact of record size on performance being often higher than impact of any other factor. As a surprise I also showed my first results of testing actual simultaneous clients connecting to FileMaker Server 19.2 instead of simulating clients by server-side scripts. At the time of the meeting, however, I w
  4. Have you ever dreamed of being able to generate high quality scalable barcodes in FileMaker solely using calculations, with no plug-ins, fast enough, in a way compatible with server-side scripts, FileMaker Go and FileMaker WebDirect, and completely free of charge? Your dream has just come true... There are various solutions for barcodes already available, from special barcode fonts, through Brian Dunning’s custom functions using rotated underscore as a symbol primitive, various web services such as those mentioned in Anders Monsen’s article, to the award-winning Barcode Creator, and
  5. The first Claris Engage, a successor of FileMaker DevCons, was originally planned to take place in Nashville, Tennessee. The coronavirus pandemic has changed plans for most live events this year, and so Claris Engage turned to a virtual experience. We attended, and even participated as a virtual exhibitor, and it surpassed all our expectations. So let us share our highlights of the conference with you. Learning from the sessions is great, but the biggest value in every conference lies outside of the session rooms, in networking with the peers, being able to discuss problems and idea
  6. As a Claris partner, we also resell FileMaker licenses. Buying the license from us has some extra benefits, one of them being a nicely formatted PDF document with all information about the license, including download links. In order to be able to generate this document from our FileMaker based CRM, I needed to find a way to include functional web links in it. So I wrote a custom function that does it, without needing any plug-ins or other external technologies. The custom function simply takes a PDF saved from FileMaker, and adds a link to it. As long as you know what page and where
  7. Everyone talks about IoT. We don't talk, we do. Just like our colleague Milan who wanted to get his greenhouse under control... As a little boy he grew tomatoes and some herbs in pots on balcony (because we didn’t have a garden at that time). Over time his hobby evolved into growing vegetables in a greenhouse. Since he also likes technology and automation, now many of the repeating processes are controlled by Claris FileMaker, Raspberry Pi, Hardwario, LoRa, Node-RED, etc. As Milan grew up and got his own garden, he could build a greenhouse there. Thanks to the greenhouse, he ca
  8. The "swiss army knife" plug-in is now compatible with iOS App SDK 19 and can execute macOS and Windows system scripts asynchronously Prague, CZ -- June 23, 2020 -- 24U Software announces the version 3.1 of 24U Toolbox Plug-In for FileMaker, toolbox of the most useful calculation functions for daily use. This update adds compatibility with iOS App SDK 19 and makes it possible to execute macOS and Windows system scripts asynchronously (without waiting for result). Version 3.1 brings: Function Toolbox_DoSystemScript can be called asynchronously Support for iOS
  9. We have tested all our products and are happy to confirm that they all work fine with the new version, only iOS versions of our plug-ins need to be updated for the new iOS App SDK. Now we are preparing our performance lab to test FileMaker 19 performance and compare it to the previous versions. Read more details in our latest article and let us know what you would like us to include in our performance test. The article also explains what we consider being the three most valuable new features of FileMaker 19 and why.
  10. When most of the world is forced to work from home, many things you took for granted can disappear over night. Speed of the internet is one of them, performance of your business critical apps follows very closely. The good news is that most of the custom FileMaker apps out there do not use the full power of the platform and they can be made much faster. So let me share a few tips on how you can optimize your FileMaker apps for working from home over the slower-than-usually internet connection. Do you know what tools you can use and how you can improve your app's performance to an ac
  11. Our lead developer Milan made his dream come true and built a pond controlled by FileMaker and Raspberry Pi. The pond contains about 35 cubic meters of water (about 9246 gallons) and it’s 2 meters (6.5 feet) deep in its deepest point. It is equipped with both mechanical and pressurized filter, UV light, pumps for filtration and waterfall, and an air pump. There are water plants, fish, and other water animals living in the pond. To keep the pond in good conditions, Milan has automated control of its environment with the help of Claris FileMaker and Raspberry Pi… Click here to re
  12. BTW, there is an "easter egg" in the video. Something extra I did not mention in the article or in the voice over. Who will be the first to spot it? 😉
  13. Claris has recently released Claris Connect. It’s an integration platform provided as a cloud-based service, letting you easily connect many different apps and make the data smoothly flow between them. To show you how it works, I have prepared a short demo using Claris Connect to integrate a FileMaker based CRM with Maichimp. Read how Claris Connect fits in the toda's world and how it compares to other integration methods
  14. Excerpts from my “FileMaker 17 Performance Lab” session are available, covering some of the topics not covered anywhere else, as well as from my presentation of upgraded demo integrating 11 hardware technologies. Take a look at highlights of the FileMaker Konferenz 2018 and learn how field dependencies can slow down your Set Field, how to minimize the impact of slow network connection, why to avoid overusing conditional formatting, how to benchmark and optimize layout rendering, or how to integrate RFID, NFC, mobile printer, motors, digital scale, and other hardware with FileMaker app running
  15. In October 2017 I presented two sessions at the German-speaking FileMaker Konferenz. My first session was focused on results of almost forty thousand performance tests our team had performed and evaluated to compare different versions of FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server and the second one was focused on our recent great discovery of the impact of database structure on its performance. Now we have made the best parts of those sessions publicly available, so don’t hesitate and dive into the deep waters of FileMaker performance and I hope you'll find the videos useful.
