  1. Hi, I have a pretty simple business report that shows Revenue, Cost of Goods, Gross Profit (Calculation: Revenue - Cost of Goods), and Profit Percent (Calculation: Gross Profit / Revenue). The report is summarized by Customer, and I have Summary fields that total the first three fields and takes an average of the Profit Percet. The problem is, I don't really want an average profit percent -- I want the GrossProfitSUM / RevenueSUM. But when I write that calculation, it doesn't seem to work. I've had this problem before... what's the best way to handle this? Thanks! Andrew

Escaping quotes in a calculated field

hmm... no, it isn't being stored... this is my calculation Substitute(ItemName; """; """) ItemName = "hello" and the calculation is "hello" too, instead of "hello" what else could i be missing?

Escaping quotes in a calculated field

hmm, doesn't seem to work. In fact, it doesn't seem to effect the output at all.
  6. Hi, I need to add a slash to all double quotes in a text field so that when exported, it can be properly interpreted by the program we are sending the flat file to. So, for example, this: he said "hello, how are you?" becomes this: he said "hello, how are you?" It seems like a pretty simple fix by using the substitute function, but I'm having problems getting the syntax right, i.e. this doesn't seem to work: Substitute(FieldName;""";"") Any idea how to do this? Thanks, Andrew

Limiting the number of records in a portal

    Tried it... still slow
  8. Hello, I want a portal that shows our most recent 5 orders. The problem is, it takes forever to sort all 20,000 orders by the sort criteria I have on the portal. My portal only shows five rows and doesn't have a scroll bar... any faster way to do this? Thanks, Andrew Sorry if this has been covered before -- I didn't see it anywhere.
  9. I got my MacBook yesterday... Filemaker Advanced 8 seems to run just fine in Rosetta. No significant performance difference from my old Powerbook. Just though you might like to know. Andrew
  10. Hi, I once saw a little file that allows you to insert an image in a global container without shutting down the server. I can't find it anywhere now... I'm beginning to think it was a dream. Anyone know about this? Thanks, Andrew
  11. Hi, Is there a way to reference the next / previous record in a found set from a given record? For example, I have a database of books. On the form, I have forward and back arrows to take you to the next / previous book record. I'd like to have writing below the arrows that says something like "Backward to 'Grapes of Wrath'" and "Forward to 'Of Mice and Men'" Any NextRecord(FieldName) type function? Thanks! Andrew

    Portal Line items

I agree with you... it isn't a good idea. Unfortunately, it's the way the original database designers did it and would be impossible to change at this point. I could just mimic the techique they are using (cumbersome scripting), but I was wondering if there's a better way -- this system was designed back in FM5. Sounds like there isn't...

    Portal Line items

Unfortunately, that won't work -- I need the numbers stored permanently in a field, so I can reference them in other places as Item 123-3, 124-2, etc.

    Portal Line items

    I have a parent table, Orders, and a child table, Order Items. Order Items is a portal in Orders. In addition to a normal Order Items Primary Key field, I want a unique numbered key that is specific to each order. So, for example, the fields in Order Items might look like this: OrderID# OrderItemID# OrderItemLineItem# OrderItemName 123 _ _ _ _ 567 _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Apple 123 _ _ _ _ 568 _ _ _ _ _ _ 2 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Orange 123 _ _ _ _ 569 _ _ _ _ _ _ 3 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Pear 124 _ _ _ _ 570 _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Shirt 124 _ _ _ _ 571 _ _ _ _ _ _ 2 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Jacket 124 _ _ _ _ 572 _ _ _ _ _ _ 3 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Hat So the question is, how do I generate the OrderItemLineItem# field? Does that make sense?

    Portal Line items

Hi, I have a portal that lists items for an order. I would like to make the items a numbered list, with the number stored as a field in the item record, i.e. 1. Apples 2. Oranges 3. Pears How can I autogenerate serial numbers that restart at 1 for each related portal? Thanks! Andrew
