  1. I recently upgraded a client with a small office setup from a Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition with Active Directory domain down to a CentOS-4 with Samba. The office has 10 people and no need for an ADS system that was already pretty broken anyways(bad permissions, broken DNS, etc). So, the one app they use a lot of is FileMaker Pro 5.5. Running under Crossover Office Professional 5.0.1, FileMaker Pro 5.5 installed just fine. It opens up fine, opens the databases fine, says that it is shared for multi-user access, but no other systems can see it as a remote host. Likewise, if another system opens the database from the fileserver for multi-user sharing, the FileMaker on Linux cannot see it as a remote host either(all the other clients can). At first I figured it was just the firewall ports, so I looked up online and it says that FileMaker uses port 5003 for sharing over TCP/IP. I openned up both TCP and UDP for 5003 on the CentOS firewall with no luck. I even went as far as to turn off iptables all together. Still no luck. It would be really great if someone could give me some clues as to why this is. Perhaps Crossover Office doesn't allow shared applications or something? By the way, I tried this running FileMaker as both the normal and as root, with the same results. As a side note, all Samba shares are working perfectly and very smooth across the workgroup. Thanks for any suggestions.
  2. I have written numerous emails to FileMaker about their lack of support for Linux. I work for a government housing authority, but my family own a substance abuse counseling facility, whos network systems I also manage. We have been a FileMaker Pro-based shop since the days of FM 3.x. I run a Linux Firewall, a FreeBSD file server/print/DNS/etc. server. We have 1 Windows Server for FileMaker, and Windows desktops because of FileMaker. FileMaker is the only thing hindering us from becoming a 100% Windows-free environment. Even with as busy as I am, I am getting close to getting rid of FileMaker throughout the network and dumping it to a PostgreSQL database with a web-based PHP front-end..perhaps even a Java front-end. I like FileMaker, I always have, but their lack of support is becoming increasingly intolerable. It's great that 5.5 had a Linux version, but that's far too old.
  3. I think it must have been some sort of corruption. I had an idea of trying to to a database recover, and now I can modify the file as guest. BTW - there are no users/groups defines for it, only a password. Another thing that didn't get fixed by the database recovery is as follows: The database is for a substance abuse treatment facility, and there is a page for group education attendance, wih dates and amount of hours spent.. At the end there is a calculated field totalling the amount of hours... And it's not calculating amymore.. I have checked the calculation formula, and near as I can tell it's correct.. Not a big deal.. just a querk that doesn't make sense.. Thanks for your help though.
  4. Sorry... the field is not a calculated field, I get this error on all fields in the form when it is opened as a guest. And i found no entry for "Allow Modification" under the Format > Format Field box, it is called "Allow Entry Into Field" under the "Behavior" section, and that box is checked. Any other ideas? Also, to see if it was relating to the Windows 2000 Server, I pulled the database onto a Windows 2000 Professional workstation, opened the database, then accessed it from a Windows XP Professional workstation using the hosts box, and came up with the same results: Original opener (host) of the database can do whatever they want, any subsequent (guests) people opening the database cannot use "Find" mode. Thanks for your help... Any other ideas?
  5. Well that didn't work. And the Windows 2000 Server is not running any other services...yet. And it is only serving 5 other people. I disabled sharing of the FileMaker Pro database, and left it open under the server. Upon opening it via any other computer, using the hosts option, I still get the "field is not modifiable" box.
  6. Thanks a lot guys... Yes you are correct I am NOT using FileMaker Server. That is why I id not originally post in the FMServer Forum. I'll try that. Thanks a lot!
  7. I have a FileMaker 5.5 database shared from a WIndows 2000 Server (not a domain yet) I had the database open on the server so it would be the host but anyone else that opens the database can't do anything. The front desk person opened the database, hit Ctrl+F to search, and when trying to key a last name to search it pops up with "Field is not modifiable" The file is NOT Read-Only, I have given full permissions to the share for Everyone. I don't know what the problem is. I'm not a FileMaker guru at all... I'm a network tech and system admin. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks
