  1. Hi everyone, My boss and I have been discussing the future of our FileMaker databases, and whether it would be worthwhile to upgrade. First, a little background. We are running FileMaker Server 5.5 on a machine running OS X 10.2.8. It interfaces with our web server, which is running WebSTAR on a 10.2.8 machine, via Lasso Pro 5. This, as I am sure you know, involves using a "web companion" machine running FileMaker Pro 5.5. This is on a machine running Windows XP. While this does work, the technology is very out of date, and the web companion is prone to problems, with FMP hanging up on a semi-regular basis. Plus, the hardware these machines are on is all older, and is beginning to show its age. We are considering purchasing new hardware and upgrading to Lasso 8.5, FMSA 8, and OS X Server 10.4 (or 10.5, depending on what is available when) using the built-in Apache server as the web server (I know that OS X Server isn't required for this, but the enhanced management interface is worth it for our needs). We also understand that there would be a fair amount of rewriting Lasso code, but we are prepared for that. I just had a few questions for people who have used FM 8: (1) How difficult will it be to migrate our existing databases from FMS 5.5 to FMSA 8? We have a couple of gigabytes of data comprising hundreds of thousands of records, and a smooth database transition is absolutely necessary. Are there tools available (included with FileMaker or otherwise) that ease this process? (2) How do people feel about FMSA 8? I have read positive things about it, but haven't been able to find a full-on review of it. Is web content management a whole lot easier without using the web companion server? I would imagine so, since it seems to remove a whole layer of complexity, but I obviously don't know for sure. Thanks for any and all info, folks!
  2. Hi all, We have FMS 5.5 installed on an OS X machine, with about 15 clients (mostly running OS X, but a few running XP) which connect. The way we normally go in is to click open File -> Open Remote. While this is still working, there is suddenly a tremendous delay in the amount of time it takes to load up the file list. Whereas before it would load in 10 seconds or so, it now takes a minute or more. This just started today. We haven't had any other network issues, and I tried stopping FMS and restarting the machine. The load is also quite low - 0.10 or less. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this delay?
  3. Only two IP addresses access the machine running Web Companion - the server running Lasso, and the server running FM Server 5.5. And only the server running Lasso is covered by the license agreement. It's a very nice arrangement. Anyway, While FMSA 7 would allow us to run one less machine, I seriously doubt it would save us a whole bunch of money in the future. Our outside support costs are already at zero - all support is done in-house, and wages for people doing that support are going to be paid regardless. Electricity is included in our rent, so that isn't even a concern. Really, there is no financial incentive to shell out the additional money instead of backporting. Hell, I'm going to try and get a refund for FMS 7.
  4. It works fine with FileMaker Pro 5.5, which includes the Web Companion plugin. So far as I am aware, there is no FMPU 7 which includes a web companion plugin. Or am I mistaken?
  5. FileMaker Server 5.5 is all you need to use Web Companion and connect your databases to your web server via Lasso. We currently use this exact solution as follows: FM 5.5 Server <-> FM Pro 5.5 with Web Companion <-> web server using WebSTAR and Lasso. Going back to FM 5.5 will take some time, but will almost certainly prove to be the easiest, most cost-effective method. If you know of a way to directly connect FM Server 7 to Lasso without shelling out the extra cash, please let me know :
  6. It's not FM 7, it's the limitations in FM Server 7; specifically, the inability to use the Web Companion feature for sending data to a separate web server for use with Lasso. We are not going to shell out an additional $1500 for FM SA for something that was previously a part of FM Server, and I have not been able to find a way to do the same thing with just FM Server.
  7. Hi all, So we recently discovered that FM 7 (or, more to the point, FM Server 7) will not meet our needs, and are looking to back-port our databases to FM 5.5. Now, the databases that we have created do not use any new functionality - anything that we used was available in FM 5.5. Is it possible in any way to easily backport this?
  8. This isn't really a usable solution for us. For starters, we use Lasso, and as such have a web database product in place. Also, it doesn't relate to the problem of connecting FM Server with FM Pro.
  9. Hi All, So, with previous versions of FileMaker, you used to be able to connect FM Server to an outside server (such as Lasso) using a machine running FM Pro with Web Companion. I've noticed that FM Pro 7 conveniently leaves out the Web Companion plug-in. Is there another way to connect without shelling out the extra $1500 for FM Server Advanced?
  10. Hello all, First, a background: We have been using FileMaker Server 5.5 on Mac OS 10.2 for several years, connecting to our web server via a Windows XP machine running FileMaker Pro 5.5. The web server is running Lasso Professional 5, connecting to the databases via the web companion box. We have recently begun a new project with a new set of servers. We have a Mac OS 10.3 server running FileMaker Server 7, which we would like to connect to another web server running Lasso 7. However, things appear to have changed. We had previously used the Web Companion feature in the FileMaker Pro 5.5 machine; in FileMaker 7, this option appears to have disappeared. I had previously been told that this feature was now "built in" to FM 7 and thus a plugin was no longer needed. However, we cannot connect to the companion server in any way. What configuration steps are necessary to make the data on the FileMaker 7 Server visible to the web server running Lasso 7? Thanks for any and all tips and advice.
