  1. I tried using access the other day, what an ordeal. I have been an intermittent user of filemaker pro for about ten years and haven't found anything better! Its the most office friendly database program ever written. Just glad it was ported over to windows.
  2. Well, I have been mainly converting my filemaker files to dbase iv and attaching them to shape files in arcview and autocad. There is a way to make filemaker odbc compliant and use the filemaker files in autocad map. I haven't gotten the drivers to work properly yet. Anyway I use filemaker to do the data processing and report making since it is so flexible.
  3. Are there any plugins available that will allow users to import or export scripts as txt files in windows? I haven't used filemaker in awhile, and I am getting back into it for gis applications. I seem to recall at one time the scriptmaker had a macro recorder the would map user menu selections to the script file. Was this a mac thing?
  4. Take a look at the file I posted here http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?fid/31/tid/164109/pid/174268/post/last/#LAST, example.zip. It was written in fmp4.0 so you should be able to follow it. The reason why I checked for dups was to avoid totaling given zipcode more than once.
  5. I got every thing to work now. Thanks Laretta sorry about the mental anguish. Here is the file I came up with. The problem with the file I attached had some other stuff I was trying to play around with to get me the same result. It didn't matter if I had the first or last record, just had to unload those in between. This file was written in Filemaker 4.0. Using version 7 I didn't have to do all this but I thought someone else might like to see this in its rudimentary version. The application counts the total number of members within a given zipcode example.zip
  6. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I was able to identify duplicates but when I go to do a find , no records are displayed. The self join doesn't seem to be working either SELFJOIN.zip
  7. no it would be count( school:employment) In your portal, lets call it talley, with a field called employment. Then talley:employment would be related back to school:employment. Talley:employment would have the career types you wished to count. I am assuming the categories would be limited to at the most 10.But if that is not the case, the way you could insure that you had all the different employment types in talley:employment would be to make it unique, then import the school:employment field into Talley. There would be only one listing for each category of employment. This is basically what I did with the zipcode example. I hope this is understandable. I have some more example files which might make this a little clearer.
  8. I used a portal database to display the results of the counting. I used zipcodes as the common key. sample.zip
  9. Check out the post about counting. These guys answered my exact same questions. Drop me a line if you would like to see how I tackled the problem. http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/169124/post/172804/hl/+albud1962/#172804
  10. could someone upload a sample file of this procedure? I am not seeing it. Thanks for your patience
  11. Gees I can't believe it was that simple. Thanks GUYS!
  12. I have attached the two files to assist in the analysis. I appreciate everyone's help. Ultimately this information will be used in a GIS application with a thematic map so I need a total for each zipcode record so I can color code the map. After I get the values I am saving the file as a DBF iv file fm7.zip
  13. I am trying to write a script with two DB files file 1 contains zipcodes and post office names [color:brown][color:orange]file 2 contains a list of members and their zipcode . I want to create a query using FM7 that totals the number of members in any given zipcode. This total would be a field called total members in file 1. Any suggestions on how I can do this?
