  1. Ouch! That was quick and to the point: it solves my problem! Thanks a million! Thank you Daniele!
  2. Hi all. This has got to be the most basic question but it's got me stumped! I have two tables: "Buildings", consisting of two fields: Building_Id (the key, numeric, auto-enter serial) and Building_Name (text). And "Units", consisting of Unit_Id (key, numeric, auto-enter serial), Unit_Description (text). A building consists of one or more units. I want to relate the two files so that when I'm looking at the "Units" layout I'll see what building a unit belongs to; I've added, in the "Units" table, the field Unit_Bldg_Id (number) and created the relationship to connect Buildings::Building_Id and Units::Unit_Bldg_Id. On the Units layout, I've added the field Unit_Bldg_Id, setup as a drop-down list, displaying values from a value list that "use values from first field" Building_Id in table "Buildings". I've also chosen the option to "also display values from second field" Building_Name from table "Buildings". Finally, I've also chosen the option to "show values only from second field". Now, when I create a new unit and reach the field in question, I do get my drop-down list and it's displaying the Building names. However, as soon as I select one of the items in that list, it plunks the Building_Id into the field, and not the Building_Name which it was displaying... PLEASE... is there a way to get the Building_Name and only the Building_Name in that field??? So sorry to trouble you with such a simple question, but it's really got me! P.S. Would the answer be to use the Building_Name as the key into the Buildings table and do without the "numeric, auto-enter serial" field altogether??? Thanks!
  3. Hi, Genx. Sorry to disagree slightly with you... The SQL language is not a problem; you're right that one day is ample time to learn the basics of that language and will allow you to do probably 90% of what you need to do with the database. The problem, from my point of view, is with the database mySQL itself. I downloaded the "free" version for Mac OS X from the MySQL AB site. I fully expected to install a Mac OS X application. Not a Unix application. The installation itself looked like a Mac OS X installation, But after that, poof! I couldn't find anything, in the OS X environment, that related to mySQL! Checking some online documentation points to some directory (Oooops, that's not OS X anymore) which is not even visible from the OS X environment! It also hints at some Unix instructions (which I can't quote accurately at the moment because I'm not at the same place and not on the same machine) such as "sudo"; having to log on as "root", checking that only one instance is running, connecting to the database, etc. I mean, if I want to "connect" to a FM database, I double-click its icon and that's it! I'm connected to it, there's only one instance and I'm still myself, the regular user!!! If I wanted to use mySQL on a UNIX machine, I would have downloaded the UNIX version!!! This problem may be related to the fact that OS X is based on UNIX; it may also be related to my ignorance of UNIX and to the very limited time I had last week to install mySQL. I see you're on Windows. Therefore you may not have this problem at all. Anyway, I'm on vacation. I'll log on to some mySQL forum and try to find out if my perception is correct or not. Sigh... Thanks for your comments!
  4. Hi all. I'm at the cottage with a portable machine on which I installed FM Pro Advanced (8.0v3) just before leaving home. Apparently, the installation does NOT copy all the files that are on the CD. Specifically, it doesn't copy the ODBC driver! Which I need for some work that I'd planned on doing here. I certainly don't plan on driving (no pun, of course!) back home just to get the driver either. And, of course, I didn't bring the FM Pro CD with me... I looked on the FMI site but couldn't find the driver there. Does anyone know where I could download the driver from? What I need is something called "ivslk18.dylib" which is inside the "SequeLink.bundle". Thanks!
  5. Hi, Jalz. I'm looking at doing the same thing (converting FM DB into a MySQL). But it looks like a HUGE hassle, starting with having to learn Unix, apparently; using a command line interface; using "Terminal", etc.. I took a quick look, but it looked to me like I was going back at least 30 years to the days of ISAM and VSAM on OS/360, etc... I was really disappointed by that first look and will start looking to see if there is a *graphical* interface to MySQL. But please keep us posted!
  6. Thanks, Søren. Good links. Doesn't seem to be much interest in Revolution in this community. Maybe I'll have better luck in the Revolution forums? Thanks for your response.
  7. I did, I did! Turns out my problem was related to nomenclature between the FM Pro database name, DSN name, etc. Revolution was also not issuing the proper message which didn't help either... And the "Browse" button in ODBC Administrator doesn't work properly, etc. ANYWAY, the driver is installed, the connection works (between FM and Rev) and I've been able to do simple things. Now, on to more complicated things: testing the relationships in a multi-table database, creating records in the DB from Rev, etc. Testing for volumes, also, because Chapter 4 of the "FM 8 ODBC and JDBC Developer's Guide" flatly states "SELECT * statements on larger databases might not function correctly". How "larger" is defined is not given... Nor in what way it might not function correctly... (Sigh...)
  8. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Hey guys! Could someone please answer my question?! (Or start another thread with the Runtime Revolution topic???) Please help me install the bloody ODBC driver! Thanks!!!
  9. Hi, all. I'm trying to test using Runtime Revolution as a front-end to a FM Pro database. But I'm not getting very far: apparently, I can't even install the FM Pro ODBC driver... I've tried to follow all the procedures listed in the two FM documents ("FM 8 ODBC and JDBC Developer's Guide" and "Installing FM ODBC and JDBC Client Drivers"). For one thing, when I tried to use the "Browse" button to specify the driver file's location (which is in /Library/ODBC), the file open dialog doesn't get any further than the "SequeLink.bundle". I then thought that instead of using the "Browse" button, I could type the full address (/Library/ODBC/SequeLink.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ivslk18.dylib). That seemed to get me a bit further, as the driver, in ODBC Administrator, now displays a size. (When the path stopped at the "bundle", the size was 0.) Then I configured a "system DSN", pointing to a FM Pro file, using the recommended parameters ("Localhost, port 2399 and the FM Pro file name without the extension). Saved all this but was unable to test the connection, as I don't have a clue as to what the manuals are referring to when they state "The OpenLink ODBC Administrator allows you to verify that you’ve correctly configured the ODBC client driver to access the FileMaker data source." Then, in Revolution, I tried to create a Query that would point to the FM file in question, But I get the error message "Revdb error: [iODBC][Driver Manager]Specified driver could not be loaded" Does anyone here have any clue as to what I should be attempting next??? Thanks! OS X 10.4.8 FM Pro Advanced 8.0v3 ODBC Administrator 1.0.2 Revolution 2.8.1.470
  10. Hi. Did you ever get ODBC to work? I'm having the same problems as you, apparently following the same path that you followed min installing and configuring the driver... Anyone out there can answer this??? Thanks!
  11. Hi, all. Is anyone on the forum actually using Revolution as a front-end (user interface) to a FM Pro database? Thanks!
  12. Oooops... sbg2, I have a problem trying to adapt your scripts to my environment... Here's the problem: when my script hits the Pause/Resume Script, it displays a "Continue" button (in the status area). And I have to hit that button, at the end of the process of coming back from the second window. How come??? When I run your scripts, this button doesn't appear... I've looked everywhere to see if there's a parameter, etc. and couldn't find one... Thanks for your help!
  13. Excellent suggestion, sbg2! Just what I was looking for!
