  1. That works perfectly!! thank you so much! btw, do you have any references where one could learn text manipulation like this? It's always been a weakpoint of mine I'm afraid.
  2. Hi, I need help removing certain text from a text field. Below is the sample text. Basically, in this case, I need all the text removed (including the date) starting at 11/19/2013 and ending at the last phone number of, in this case, Jeff Kate. Some records may only have two contacts- this one has three. And it's possible that the Work # may be blank, but if it is, the text "Work:" will still be there. There may be text in this field that doesn't have this format (date time stamp, name, cell, home, work). That stuff I need to keep. Thanks in advance for any help! 11/19/2013 4:46:31 AM Bob Smith Cell: (555) 555-1212 Home: (555) 555-1212 Work: (555) 555-1212 11/19/2013 4:46:30 AM Laura Pluto Cell: (555) 555-1212 Home: (555) 555-1212 Work: 11/19/2013 4:46:30 AM Jeff Kate Cell: (555) 555-1212 Home: Work: (555) 555-1212 89/11Emergency Contacts: Bill Smith (aunt) (555) 555-1212 and Tim and John Henry (uncle) (555) 555-1212
  3. I was able to do a test today and I tried hosting an FM14 solution created database on the FMS13 and got the message " Database "Invoices" could not be opened. Database version incompatible; try opening in FileMaker Pro." Is this what you mean by the above?
  4. Can FMS13 host FMP14 databases (created with FMP14)? I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to this. thanks, John
  5. Hi everybody! I have a FM database (version 9) that I created for a school-- it manages the students' records. Currently, only the teachers and admins have access to it. The plan is to create a 'front-end' to allow access to student records for the parents. So here's out the flow would look like: Local Network - Database - IWP -> Internet My question-- for 200+ students, if I were to use Filemaker's built-in security, that would require a LOT of managing of users. Instead, I would like to create a strong password for each student and then give each parent that password. So, when they access the IWP from their home browser, it would pop up with Student ID: Student Password: And once they type in their password, it'll go to that specific record only and only allow edits to that record. Not sure how to do the above-- has anyone had any experience doing this? And if so- any example databases? thank you so much!! John
  6. I was thinking of getting FMS 11 (You can still find old/used versions). If we stick with pre-12 we can keep current clients and not have to upgrade them as well. But, strong support for IWP is necessary. Is IWP in 11 stable?
  7. Hi, Currently using FM Server 9. We are planning on using IWP extensively and was wondering if it's worth going to FM Server 12 Advanced, vs purchasing something cheaper like FM 11 Server Advanced or any other earlier versions. The idea would be to re-design the current database to be IWP friendly for internal and external use. We are not very familiar with the different versions of Server Advanced and their respective IWP differences and am hoping someone here can shed some light. thank you, John
  8. Are you saying FMS can only use 4Gigs? or the Mac Pro? the Mac Pro can use up to 32Gigs of RAM. As far as the server and what to get: I'd recommend minimum Dual G5 PowerMac. 4 Gigs of RAM. RAID 0 + 1 for the Boot/Data location. Then another drive for a clone of the boot drive. And one more drive to backup (versioning) the backups of your backups.
  9. Hi comment! How are you? thanks for the info,, I went ahead and did it the long way :
  10. but then instead of typing out a long script, i'd have to hunt and select name1,address1,state1,phone1,cellphone1, all the way up to 8 or so. hmmmm
  11. Hi, I'm working on a database with student records. Each record has the student name and info-- address, phone #s, etc. The problem is that it was setup so that along with each student, it also has the student's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, etc..,, each one of these 'relatives' has unique fields for address, name, etc.. so, DB Fields: student_name mom_name father_name student_address student_address2 student_city mom_address mom_address2 and so on.. What's the easiest way to split this up, while maintaining the relationship- automagically? -- without having to resort to making a script to copy fielda to globalfielda, copy fieldb to globalfieldb, etc., then create new record and fill in the fields. There's gotta be at least over 100 fields that I have to go through to do it the way I described above! thanks!
  12. yup, no luck in doing that.. the cache should have been flushed many times before i had to do a force restart-- also,, a script i created is also missing! just vanished!
  13. why would it lose so much data? i believe it was last weds., that i had to force restart the machine.. but it lost data that was entered on tuesday!! this is normal?
  14. yup.. too recent : i have 4 rotating backups, but none from when/before the incident happened. Anybody seen this happen before?
