  1. Thank you very much - this was very helpful.
  2. Thank you for your reply. I understand filemaker doesn't support this natively but I don't understand the solutions you've offered. Could you either give me an example or refer me to some guide. thanks for taking the time to respond.
  3. Greeting, perhaps I can get some help. I am trying to create a Budget/Chart of accounts solution. I have 2 tables -1, Chart of Account which includes a unique 4 number account code (eg 3012) and a budget amount The second table is Line Items which contains an account code and an amount. The 2 files are linked via the 4 number account code I have a layout where I can go to a Chart of Account record and enter line items via a portal. So far so good. The problem I'm having is this - I have many more records in my Chart of Accounts than I do line items. I need to create
  4. Wow, it's so clear now. I don't know why I couldn't get it on my own. Thank you.

  6. I don't know why I was having so much trouble but I'm relishing the fact that it's working now. Thank you again for the tip.
  7. Thank you very much. I was trying all sorts of variations on your suggestion and finally got it to work. Apparently it has to be a Text field with an auto-calculation to work as opposed to a calculation field. Again, very much appreciated. MJ
  8. Greetings, Maybe someone can help - I have 2 tables 1. Quotes which has a unique field QuoteID and a global field gQuoteLocation and 2. Quote_Detail which has QuoteID, QuoteDetailID and QuoteLocation. I've set up a layout with a portal so I can see the one to many relationship between Quotes and Quote_Detail. When I have the relationship set only for Quotes::QuoteID = Quote_Detail::QuoteID everything is fine. And then I have to go and get fancy. I added a relationship so that Quotes::gQuoteLocation = Quote_Detail::QuoteLocation. Everything works as expected, that is, I can
  9. Greetings, I have a table with a number of fields, some with text calculations that can be appended with user input. If the user cuts and pastes from, oh let's say a webpage with a different font, the new font and it's size are pasted in the field. Is there a way to automatically conform all input to the font set in the field? Thanks for any help.
  10. Let's say I have a table with two fields - Name and Number. The Name field is is a combination of first names and last names. The Number field is just a phone number. Here's what I want to do - In one layout I want to have a search field where I'd enter part of the name, either first or last name, then press a button and either it will go the only matching record or populate a portal with the possible matches. I believe I should be able to do this with a self join but I can't figure it out. I looked at http://www.kevinfrank.com/demo-files.html (his contact finder) but I can'
  11. Actually, thanks again. I worked it out. Cheers, MJ
  12. Thanks for your reply but if you have a moment could you please be a bit more detailed. You're dealing with a dunce. Cheers MJ
  13. Greetings, I have a flat file mailing list with about 2000 names and 400 unique zip codes. I created a separate table for the zip codes (thanks fmforum). Now what I want to do is select a subset from the zip code table and print out all the addresses for that subset. What I can do is create a find for the zip codes in my zip code table and then do multiple finds in the mail address table. I'm doing this using the loop and next record script steps. But it seems there should be a better way. It seems like it should be a join table but there is only the 1 key, that is, zip code.
