  1. In our current database we have a table of contact information for our clients. On a shared network drive, we also have a filing system where each one of these clients has a folder with relevant documents inside. I've set up a script that can will take the user to the client's folder in windows explorer, given the file path. What I'd like to do is come up with a user-friendly way for a user to input that file path into the client table. Up until now we've just been copying and pasting the path from explorer. Is there an easier way to do this? I'm imagining dialog box similar to the way th
  2. I want to create a field that keeps a "history" of the values entered in another field from the same table. Basically, when the user changes the value in Field A, I want that new value to be added to a list in Field B, without forcing the user to press a button. I've tried playing around with calc fields but no luck so far. Is this possible to do in FM9? Thanks for the help.
  3. Thank you comment, that works perfectly! Thanks again.
  4. Hi, In one of my files I have a First Name field and Last Name field. I've had a problem with users frequently creating duplicate records for people, so I'd like it to inform them when they've entered a first and last name combo that is not unique. I wrote a quick calc field (first_name & " " & last_name), but unlike with regular fields I can't find a way to have this data validated. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this but at the moment it eludes me. Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the input. I'd like to stick with the portal setup, but I need help with the filtering criteria and my relationship. I've done this before but only with one field. In this case I have a lot of different fields that I want the user to be able to sort by. Is there a way to do this without making a separate relationship for each field? Thanks, and sorry if that wasn't clear.
  6. Hi, Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm currently stuck on this one issue. I have a portal displaying a list of cases, and if the user clicks on one of them it displays details of that case in the other half of the screen. What I'd like to do is allow the user to preform a search using any of the fields in the "details" half, and then display the found results in the portal. All of the cases are in the portal, so the search would just narrow them down. I tried scripting my way through it but I'm getting bogged down. Is what I'm describing possible? Thanks for the help!
  7. Excellent. Works great! Thanks for the help.
  8. Hi everyone, I have a portal with around 2000 records in it, sorted alphabetically . What I'd like to do is put a search field above the portal where I can enter a few letters from the name of one of the records and have the portal only show records that start with those letters. Like if a record I wanted to find was called "Anderson", I would just enter "and" and the portal would only show records that started with that. This would let me narrow the portal down and quickly find the record I'm looking for. I saw another post that suggested using a global field as the search field and
  9. I think I got it. I'm not sure why it wasn't working before, but switching to global fields seemed to work.
  10. I have a many to many relationship between a "Clients" table, a join table "Matters", and another table "Cases". In my relationships table, there are two instances of "Cases", one is for active cases and the other is for inactive cases. There is a status field in the "Cases" table that is "yes" if the case is active and blank if the case is not. In the join table, I have a field that is set to the constant "yes". The two instances of the "Cases" table are linked to the join table through a multi-key relationship with ID number and a this status field. For the active cases, the status field nee
  11. I have FMS 9 on a computer running Windows XP. Whenever I try to configure automatic backups, on the last "Summary" step, I get a pop-up saying "Admin Server Connection Error: An Unknown Error Has Occurred" and when I click OK it exits the FileMaker Server Admin Console. I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the server software, but I still get the same error. Any help would be great!
  12. I have a similar issue myself. Any insight would be appreciated!
  13. Here is my setup. I've got a many to many relationship between "Cases" and "Clients" through what I guess is a join table "Matters". Each Case has multiple Clients, and each Client has multiple Cases, but each Matter involves only one Client and one Case. Each matter stores the ID numbers of the Clients and Cases. Right now, to create another Matter and link a Case with a Client, on the Case layout I have a drop-down list of all the Client names taken from a value list, and a button that executes a script to make a new matter. My problem is getting the Client's ID number to complete the r
  14. I have a value list that gets its values from the Name field in the Clients table. In the Clients table, there is also a field Client Number. In a different table, I have a drop down box where the user can select a Name. What I'd like is to have the Client Number for that Name appear in a field in this second table. Do I have to relate these two tables to get this to work or is there another way? Thanks!
  15. I have a question about the visibility trick. I have a set of radio buttons that makes certain fields appear or disappear. However, the fields don't become visible until after I tab out of the radio buttons. Is there any way I can make them appear as soon as the radio button is checked?
