  1. I just tried un-indexing every variable in both tables, and to no avail; it still shows all the results. I'll keep messing around with it... I am really curious about getting around this flag field I keep having to put on my layouts. I've found ways of filtering portals on the forums by value lists, but I want to filter a portal by whatever the user wants, I guess by typing it into a field. Is there any way of doing this? *EDIT* - when I stopped using 1 and 0 for flag fields, and started using two random strings of numbers 10 digits long, everything worked again. Have no i
  2. So I need to include a field in a layout in the tab order but I also need to have it skipped over when the computer enters find mode and tabs through the fields. I tried setting "field --> behavior" to not enterable in find mode, but the computer just ignores this, and goes to the field anyway. I noticed you can set the field to global storage and it skips it, but I can't have this field be global storage. Any help greatly appreciated!
  3. I have a layout with a portal on it and a "search" function which limits the entries shown in the portals by going back to the related table and changing the placeholder variable from 1 to 0 for all the records which should be omitted. (The relationship between the tables is established by the placeholder variable, with a 1 on the record in the layout with the portal) I also have a search function for the table on a different layout, not with a portal, just a direct search, and with BOTH search functions I am having the SAME problem. ALL searches work for any combination letters/num
  4. just some rambling thoughts... I tried nesting a get(layoutname) function in the table specific commands and then amend the layout name with ::*name of field being called* but it failed. with set variable doing what I described just sets the value of the variable to the full name of the field, ie, set variable ( $search_term; Value: Get (layoutname) & "::simple_search" ) outputs "$search_term = All Gene Information::simple_search" NOT the VALUE for All Gene Information::simple_search ...this is annoying because when you specify the field straight up (no "get" funct
  5. Wait, I can make more than one layout for one table? And put all my hidden fields in that other layout??
  6. word I'm just wondering if its possible to do it without making more fields to hold data; it seems like all my solutions include a dozen hidden fields...
  7. ok so if I make a new table/layout combination and link my original table with the new one by a global variable cum match field which always has the same value on every record in the original table, create one record in the new table with the same value in the match field and a portal, I can get all the records to display I dont like it though, because I'm cluttering my layouts with even more random placeholder fields. Is there any other way to do this?
  8. I want to have an option to view data in a form or in a table. The way I was thinking was I would create a self-join to the table in question, then put up a portal on a tab field; the tab is activated and the portal appears when the user clicks on the "view as table". I joined the tables using a field (lets call it "A") and I want to list all the values of "A" for all records in one portal on each record. My only question is how do I get the portal to show all the records from the table? I tried to make the portal and just put the fields in as connected to the parent table, but
  9. So I wrote a script which searches an entire layout for a letter/word/phrase. How can I generalize this script so that I can run it on any given layout, and not have to make a custom search function for each layout? Currently, you can see (above) I am calling layout specific fields. I think need to use functions I guess to call fields dynamically, as they say. Explanation of script/variables: $search_term is the user inputed search string $search_field is the field being searched by the script in that particular iteration of the search function $end_field is the field the sea

    Quick question

How do you make the information displayed in a portal read only? I want to be able to let people look at related data in a portal but make them have go to the actual related record to edit it.
  11. So the edit layout is an exact copy of of the layout which denies editing. Then the editing button takes to the edit layout, and the submit button enters data into "real" layout and takes user back to said "real" layout? How do I set a layout such that you can't edit anything? Fields I understand, but what about portals?
  12. Hey all, I'm trying to create a fool-proof editing ability in my database by setting all user's privileges to [read-only] then run a script which using the re-login script step relogins as a user with [data-entry] priveleges. Then the user edits the page. But then when they are done editing I want them to return to their own user account (so they lose editing priveleges again); I can retrieve the login but not the password. The front end of my database is just the normal login page for web publishing. I was thinking if I store the passwords myself I could retrieve them; is
  13. I'm using Instant Web Publishing with Filemaker 8 Pro (not advanced); my start up script hides the status area but along the left side of the window (where the status area used to be) there is a strip of white. This happens when the database is opened with explorer and firefox, etc. There is just this strip of white, i.e., no background colors. In filemaker pro itself, in browse mode, when I hide the status area, the background fills in completely where the status area used to be so I can't seem to even access the problem... Thanks in advance for help!
