  1. Hey cpe1704tks, The script works perfectly, and it is very clear to me how it works!! Thank you very much for your help, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have already learned a lot from seeing the scripts put together in this way. Good luck with your Filemaker development!!! CHawk!!
  2. Thank you for this help.....I have a related question, though. Is there a way, once you have different records with different tabs completed, to ensure that the tab that has been completed is that tab that is open every time you go to that record. For example, Contact 1 has fields in Tab 3 completed, but Contact 2 has fields in Tab 2 completed. Can you force the correct specific completed tab to be open in whichever Contact's records you select???
  3. Firstly, thank you so much for your input. It is invaluable to me, and very kind of you to advise me in this way. I do not mind the structure of the database being complicated, but clearly would prefer it not to be so - if it is not necessary. Therefore, having studied the various different threads and topics about Graham's technique, and Super/Sub-Type Databases, it seems like this is probably the way to go, but I wish to be absolutely certain before I proceed with the complicated process ahead. I have decided to summarise my needs for the database to make sure that you agree on the righ
  4. That is brilliant!!! I made a mistake and left a redundant duplicate field out of view off the screen which puzzled me for a while, because the script was triggering to that duplicate field, but now everything is clear. The script seems to work perfectly! Thanks for your help.
  5. I haven't fully developed this part of the database yet. With the couples, I needed the couple instances as a join table between contacts and couples. Maybe I don't need that with the companies?!?
  6. If I wish the result of a user's entry in a questionnaire text field to command the selection of a particular tab in my layout, and a particular field in that tab, I assume that I need a script to do this. If the initial text field has four choices, and the result of this drop down list selection means that the user should enter data in different sections of the layout. I want the script to open a particular tab, and select a particular field. Any advice would be gratefully received!!!
  7. The information and the sample database file was a great help, and I have successfully managed to integrate this system into my own database design. I now have an additional question. I am trying to design a calendar which pulls together all of my various types of contacts as possible appointments that I could select. For example, I could select an individual contact, or a couple of contacts, or a company. As you can see from above, each individual entity can be tracked back to a specific primary key contact ID, but I want to be able to select different types of contacts for differen
  8. Does that mean that if my set up is, for example: Table: Contacts Fields: pk_ID_Contacts FirstName LastName FullName (calculated field) Email Table: Couples Fields: pk_ID_Couples CoupleName ContactName1 ContactName2 Table: CoupleInstances Fields: pk_ID_CoupleInstances fk_ID_Couple fk_ID_Contact Is that the setup that you are suggesting? Or, am I missing something?
  9. I am creating a database to track the activities of contacts, both in a calendar, and their financial records. However, I also have the difficulty that I want to be able to track the activities of couples (pairs of contacts), and then relate those activities back to the original individuals through portals. Each individual can belong to more than one couple, and of course, each couple contains two individuals, so I believe that this is a many to many relationship. I believe this means that I need an instance table between Contacts, and Couples. I have created various initial tab
  10. WOW - Thank you so much, Fenton. I have only had chance to have a preliminary glance at this so far, but I am going away for the next few days, and I will try to study it, and to figure out how to add the financial element. I would imagine that I may have to create a table with accounts, or currencies, or even both, and then expanding on the currently employed technique in your example database, I should be able to get some results. I will come back to you in about a week. Kindest regards....
  11. I forgot to add that the contacts would also have to be able to be multiple 'contact types'. In other words, a contact could be an organiser, and also could be a student, or a lecturer, for example. I need to be able to track the history of contacts related to their overall activity, and in specific activities. For example, if John Smith is a student, and also an event organiser - I need to be able to call up John Smith as a contact, have access to a portal which shows his student history, which events he has attended, his financial status - I also need to be able to see his 'organisation
  12. Firstly, thank you Fitch and Fenton for taking the time and effort to respond to my post. Your work is helping me greatly to understand the process required to build the database structure. Also, your example layouts forwarded to other people have really shed light on the type of layouts that might achieve the results that I need. However, I am only a little closer to my 'heavenly' truth that I will need to build the database. -: Fitch - I have begun the incredibly heavy process of writing the database out on paper, and it starts pointing out the questions that need to be answered to make
  13. I am trying to decide or resolve how to construct my filemaker database. I need to create what I would imagine is quite a complex structure. It includes: Contacts - several different types requiring different layouts for data entry Groups of contacts - presumably requiring relationships between the contacts and the different groups Events - attended by the different contacts or groups. Various types of events - some requiring group data entry, some requiring single contact data entry. Finances - payments between contacts and other contacts related to specific events The whole thin
  14. Thank you all for your help. After several hours, I have finally got a working model to build on! All my gratitude to the helping saviours. I will probably be back!!!
