  1. I am considering using DocuBin for an A/P document management system, but have a couple questions. Here is the way the workflow would proceed. The client receives an invoice ( this could be multiple pages ) and it would be scanned into a PDF file that would then be imported (drag and dropped) into DocuBin - perhaps to an Open Items folder. The invoice then has to be reviewed and approved for payment and then moved to an archive folder where it will permanently reside for future reference. My question is... are there some multi-page scanners that are better suited for this type of solution than others? I know this is unrelated to your solution, but just thought I would ask for the benefit of all. I recently sat in on a discussion with a client of mine and a company that sells a document management system and we are currently waiting for a quote on the cost. What kind of caught us off guard was the cost to another company that the sales rep mentioned. It was way more than they really want to spend.

    Modifying solution on FMSA?

Fenton Thank you for the very detail reply. We are not even close to putting live data on FMSA. We are just getting into the planning stages and I want to make sure we know how to make modifications correctly.
  3. We have a solution running in the office on FMSA. There will probably be many changes to the solution over the next few months and I'm just wondering what is the best way to handle a solution that is being modified often. Especially since we will be entering data into the db regularly. Do we close the solution on server, copy it off, modify it, then re-load it onto the server or is there an easier way? Such as, close it and modify on the server, then re-open?
  4. Is there some general methodology for creating an update routine that will convert/transfer data from an existing solution to a new version? I'm just looking for general guidelines, nothing specific.
  5. I have a categories table that is related to multiple detail tables. Each detail table contains multiple records based on the category selected. On my layout I have a popup field where the user selects a category and then it changes to a layout that has the popup field on it along with a portal of the records from the detail table. All the portals for each of the layouts (for the detail records) are basically the same and contain only one field - a description field. I'm trying to add a Find option so they can type a word in the description field and then display only the detail records that contain that word. Is it necessary to do a portal filter in order to make this work, and if so, how would I implement this?
  6. We have developed a solution that will be a subscription service. Multiple company's data will be in one file. How do you give each company the ability to manage security for THEIR data? In other words, we want to give them the ability to add users and passwords for their data.

    New Solution Suggestions

About 5 years ago I wrote a desktop application that we use to do invoicing and maintain customer information. The program is written in Visual Foxpro. Unfortunately, Visual Foxpro doesn't have a web option, so we wrote a program in Alpha Five that handles the web part of this application. Alpha Five provides the back database for online ordering and customer maintenance. The problem with this app is that we had to create a sync system that would keep the data synchronized between the desktop Visual Foxpro tables and the web Alpha Five tables. What I would like to do is write a solution in Filemaker that would allow us to do both. Access the files from the desktop as well as allow our users to access the data from a web solution. The question is, can we do this with Filemaker? I've already created some solutions with the desktop so I know it can handle that. I don't think IWP would provide enough possible connections, so using PHP and the Filemaker API is probably the only option. Can one set of files hosted on Filemaker Advanced Server be accessed by both a web and desktop solution?

    How to do this?

I have a DB with multiple tables that will store similar items, such as, Cars, Trucks, Vans, SUVs, etc. We'll calls this "Categories". I want to have a popup list that allows them to select the Category and then change the layout to suite that type of vehicle. I thought I could create a table called "Categories" and then a table for each type of vehicle. I then created a table occurrence called "Cars" where the Cars table is linked to the Categories by a key field. Since I need to add records to the Cars table, but not to the Categories table. The Categories table has one record for each type of vehicle and I created a value list based on the records in the category table. I then put the Category field at the top of the screen and the fields from the Cars table underneath it. What I want to happen is that when I change the Category, I want to move to another layout for the category selected. However, I keep getting a message that the category is from an unrelated table. Is my approach all wrong?
  10. I have a script that can process one of five fields. What I want to do is use a parameter to specify which field needs to be processed by passing a 1 to 5 and then storing the parameter to a local variable. Then I want to use the Replace Field Contents script step to replace the field specified to a 1 or 0. For example, I have the following fields: Field1 Field2 Field3 Field4 Field5 The field number variable is $FieldNumber. It looks like I have to select the field that I want to change instead of using the following: Evaluate( "Field" & $FieldNumber ) Is there a way around this without using the "Set Field" in a loop.

Trouble adding returns in a text field?

I think I may have figured it out. I think you hold down the ALT key and press the return key. I was using the return on the numeric key pad and this was not working, but I just tried it with the return key on the main section of the keyboard and that worked. Is this the right thing to do?
  12. I have a text field that I am typing text into. There are probably 5 or 6 paragraphs of information. Every once in a while, when I hit the return key to add a new field, it thinks that I am done entering text. I do NOT have the enter or return key enable to advance to the next field. When I click back in the field to trying and add more text, every time I hit the return key it saves the text and will not allow me to add more text to it. Occasionally, I've been able to hold down the shift, ctrl, or command key and been able to enter a return and then enter more text, but now I've come to the point where I can't no matter what I try. Is there a fix for this?

    Limit available layouts

By checking to see what size the screen is, you can tell whether you are running on the desktop or on FMGO via ipad or iphone. Then you just have to call the right layout for the appropriate device. I have a custom function called GetPlatform that I copied from one that Dwayne Wright wrote that I use for this purpose. The entire contents of the custom function is: Case( Abs(Get(SystemPlatform)) = 2 ; "Windows" ; Abs(Get(SystemPlatform)) = 1 ; "Mac" ; Abs(Get(SystemPlatform)) = 3 and Get ( WindowContentWidth ) < 481 ; "FMGO - iPhone" ; Abs(Get(SystemPlatform)) = 3 ; "FMGO - iPad" )
  14. Kiosk mode worked perfectly. Better than I expected.
  15. I need to create a solution that will be running on a computer (Mac) and I do not want the user to be able to exit the application. It's really a very simple solution. It's for customers to enter their emails in so that we can add them to our email notification list. It's a retail store. Pen and paper don't work because we can't read them way too often. So the solution will simply present a screen with one field on it "email" for them to type it in and click a "Save" button, which will present a "thank you" screen and then return to the "enter email screen". I would like to remove the menu completely and have the solution restart if they click the close button on the layout. The only way to exit will be to enter a passcode in the email address. I'm kind of a noobie so any help is appreciated.
