  1. I am sure this is one of those simple ones… that has me bamboozled for nearly 2 days now. I need to limit access of my users viewing only a limited set of "Company" records after they log in. The companies that they are allowed to see are listed in each respective user's profile. My opening script goes to the user's profile and creates a global variable for each company that they are allowed to view. When I go to the "Manage Security > Edit Privilege Sets > Records > Custom Privileges > Limited > Script", and use any of those variables (e.g. $$Company01"), the records table returns no records at all (i.e. as if there were no matches). When I test the script and use text for any one (or several) of those companies by name (e.g. "ACME PTY LTD"), the access rules work perfectly. To be clear: The global variables themselves are correct. I know this this because they work in other scripts absolutely perfectly, so the variables DO match the names in the field. The script looks like this: $$Company = Table Manufacturer or $$Company01 = Table Manufacturer or $$Company02 = Table Manufacturer or $$Company03 = Table Manufacturer or $$Company04 = Table Manufacturer or $$Company05 = Table Manufacturer In every respect, the variable matches the actual text, but I can only imaging that there is a problem with my syntax? Please advise. Many thanks
  2. I'm at a loss, or maybe I overt-thinked this or missed the obvious answer. I have a Filemaker 13 Database on a Filemaker Server. I also have some additional data in MS Access. A user has requested to show some MS access data on to the FM database. So I created a ODBC connection. and connected it to my test access db. Attempt #1: I created a test FM file. I started with "Import Records"-> "ODBC Data Source". I selected my Data Source. It asks for Username / PW. I get to "SQL Query Builder". BUT: when I select the table, the Columns' box does not fill in. I checked the Access DB and gave "Users" Administrator Access. but still this box does not fill in. Attempt #2: Manage-> External Data Sources. I click "New". I choose "ODBC". for DSN I selected my ODBC Source. For simplicity sake, I left Authentication as "Prompt for username and password" I clicked "OK. It added to the External Data Sources list. BUT: when I go to Manage -> Database and tried to add to the relationship, it goes "The ODBC Data Source you have selected is not supported" then I'm stuck So is this possible, having Filemaker add an Access as a data source?
  3. I have a client that would like to use MS Access to connect to a table in a solution hosted on FMS 14.0.3. What I'm reading suggests that was possible with .fmp5 and .fmp7 but is no longer available in .fm12. I've tried to use Access and both (mac) Excel and (windows) Excel to connect via ODBC to the FMS hosted table and I can construct the query and see the fields, but when I submit the request I get an error. Is it still possible to connect Excel or Access to FileMaker 14.0.3 (hosted)? The error I get appears on the attached screenshot. Is anyone currently doing this? Thank you in advance.
  4. Hello, I would like to restrict access for a specific user group to records based on a specific value in a field. For example, the field is called Category in the database table Catalogue, and the value is Canadian and is part of a value list. I've gotten to the step of a limited records access which brings me to a boolean condition screen. I'm not sure how to write the Boolean condition. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    FMS 11 Remote Access

Hello, I'm new to FMS and I'm trying to figure out why opening a database is taking so long. When I open the DB over our gigabit LAN things work smoothly and the layout opens in 1-2 seconds, but if I switch to our Wireless LAN opening the same layout can take up to 90 seconds and if I try to connect via VPN from home then we're into the minutes time frame. All the calculations occur server side in FMS correct? So if it's sending the same amount of results data why does a drop in connection speed cause such a drastic change in load times, unless of course wer're sending a HUGE amount of data to the client. Is there a way to track how much data is getting sent to the client? The size of the database is really quite tiny; something like 200k records / 3k fields. Server Specs: 10.7 Mac 2x 2.93 Ghz Hexcores 16GB of 1333 Mhz DDR3 ram. The only application it runs is FMS though it does alos serve a file store. The CPU according to Activity Monitor never gets above 1-2% usage.
  6. I'v been using Filemaker for more than 5 years. Most of the time, I was using Filemaker server with filemaker pro as clients. Now, I'm facing the big problem of performance of Filemaker when using ODBC. If I make MS Access to link to external SQL Server via ODBC, it works okay (e.g Just easy search something like A_table.a_column="1" and related_B_table_column<100) However, it seems taking forever for filemaker to do the same thing above. Why does it take so long? Is filemaker supposed to be using with only SQL queries when using ODBC? Can't I just do regular 'find' after bringing external tables to relationship(database management), and make relationship? Is there any technique to make faster when dealing with ODBC source?
  7. My client is using FM Server 14. On it I have a web form that is accessible to the public. It requires no user name or password...it's entirely open via guest login. I have server scripts that import the data entered into a broader ticketing solution that is locked down. The tickets are then deleted in the guest-accessed file. We are now looking at upgrading to FM Server 15 and the new licensing model. I have a sinking solution that this kind of approach is untenable with FM's new paradigm. Is this approach broken w/FM Server 15...requiring me to use something like Google Forms for data capture?
