  1. Hello, I am wondering if someone can help me understand how external container fields work in FileMaker 15. For testing purposes I have created a very simple database shared from our FileMaker 15 Server, the database has two fields, a single text field and a single container field. I have set the container field to store files externally which works, the files end up in a subfolder on the FileMaker server where the database itself resides. Now I would like to change the external location where the files associated with the container are stored, I found a section in the manual called "Managing external storage of container data" but this is where I am running into a problem. While logged into the database as the admin user I go to File-->Manage Containers. There is one location listed under Base Directories: "[hosted location]/Container Test/" however all of the buttons that I should be able to use to manage my containers are grayed out (New..., Edit..., Delete and Transfer Data...). The only buttons in there that work are cancel and OK. It seems like a permissions problem but I am logged in as the admin user with full access. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Ultimately I would like files uploaded to my container fields to be stored on a file share, either referenced by UNC path or by mapping a network drive. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.
  2. Has anyone had the following issue and might have a quick fix. I migrated client files from FM Server 13 residing on Mac Server to FM Server 14 residing on Windows Server. All went very well except one thing, which i would be grateful if someone could help me on. PREVIOUS STATE - The client had his files hosted on OX platform and with FileMaker 13 Server. - There is a container field in the records that would contain pdf files, these are 1 or more pages document files. - When the user dragged the file into the container field it would display as page thumbnail BOTH on Mac and Windows. AFTER THE MIGRATION TO WINDOWS SERVER - files still display thumbnails when dragged on MAC - the files are displaying FILE ICON when dragged into the container on WINDOWS. Tech boards are suggesting that Windows can not insert the file as picture into the FM container field, but there it happened before. Does anyone have any isight on this behaviour, is it documented anywhere? Thank you
  3. Containers syncing

Hello! One more question. We have a narrow table that has a container field. That field is on our sync layout and the rest of these records DO get sync'd, but the images do not. Any guidance on this one? Thanks in advance. Mark
  4. Hi, I've Googled and read, but given the "Preserve external container storage” option available now in in 13.v2, it seemed many recommended protocols were outdated. The setup: Separation Model both UI and data, hosted with FMS12. Replacing both files time.FMS12 (yep, still not updated to FMS13 - working with IT to do so)Clients are FM13Migration script (imports) written and ready to go.So, can someone please list the steps needed to replace a file on a FMS12 that has secure external containers? Should I have FMS13v2 installed on the FMS12 box and run the migration locally (via Teamviewer)? I usually copy off a backup to DropBox and do the updates on my iMac and then rehost. Is this still possible without breaking links? -Barbara
  5. Containers with different storage types

Hi, I'm loving EasySync, and props to Tim for making it so...easy. However, I'm experiencing a container issue: I have a solution that uses both OS X and iOS clients syncing to Server. I want the mac and server to use external storage but FM Go requires embedded storage (please correct me if I'm wrong). When I try to sync the FM Go file (using embedded storage) with the server (using external open storage), the containers on server display only the filename. When I then sync the mac, only the filename appears in the mac containers as well. Notes: I am unable to export the container contents from the server or the mac and GetContainerAttribute reveals the file has no name or size. I'm not compressing the files when I insert them. The file thumbnail remains visible on the iPad client but not on either of the other two. All other records in the same table "lose" their container contents and only display the filename, even if those specific records were not synced. Has anyone succeeded in mixing container storage types? It's also possible Tim already addressed this and I have something configured wrong. It is also possible I've misdiagnosed, however, when I toggle the OS X client storage type I am able to reliably replicate this issue. And, when I switch everything to embedded storage it all works fine. Please help if you have any insight on mixed container storage types in Easysync. I know someone must have run into (or solved??) this by now. Best, Josh p.s. I know gorillas are apes, ignore the inaccurate image filename I got from the internet.
  6. In our database solution we have a table that holds other documents relating to the data. The enduser might insert a PDF or a JPG. So the table is made up of a container field, a job number (unique identifier). To view the file the user clicks in the container (script exports field contents and automatically opens). The thing we would like to do is when printing a job report if there are any "external documents", would like them to print as well. We want it be be part of the complete report. The container is setup for interactive content and start playback automatically. The script exports the container and imports it back in... on the Mac it produces the correct results, on the PC it prints as a pdf icon for example. Maybe what I want is not possible. Any suggestions.
  7. This is probably a very basic, simple task but I have a couple of questions regarding container fields. I currently have a container field in FMP13 that is used to store a PDF document. The field has been optimized to support PDF information. The 1st time I enter a table record and insert a PDF into my container field I can either 'right click' and insert or use the menu bar and 'insert'. If I want to replace the PDF, the only way I can accomplish this is to use the menu bar. I'd like to be able to 'right click' whenever I want to insert a PDF. Is the menu bar my only option for updating my container information? I find no way to 'delete' the contents of my container field. I know I've got to be overlooking an obvious solution, but I sure don't see any way to accomplish this. I've tried setting the container field to be both stored locally as well as externally, always with the same results. Occasionally, when I try to replace a PDF the FileMaker Pgm will abort. When I restart the program it will insert the PDF just fine. At this point in time I'm not sure if it's a FileMaker issue or an issue with my server. If you have any suggestions on how to approach resolving this dilemma I'd appreciate it.
  8. Hi I've made a filemaker 13 database which all works ok with container fields set to ext storage and you can see the pdf's when looking at the fields all ok, but after I upload it to a filemaker server on a windows 2012 server I can no longer see the pdf's in the fields. only by exporting the content and showing it a viewer. Any ideas why it isn't showing in filemaker now it's on server. Thanks in advance Clive
  9. I have a table of pictures related to jobs, and currently I have a layout where my users add a record and they insert a picture into the container field. This works fine, but the process is slow, as they must add each picture one at a time. Is there a way to do a multi-select of pictures from the Camera Roll to add multiple pictures at once?
  10. We need a script that will print a multipage PDF within a printing sequence from filemaker pro. We use a filemaker PRO database that is rough around the edges but general works for our processes. We are trying to automate some workflows but continue to run into gaping glitches that have stumped us and held back our productivity with this application. It appears that filemaker is unable to print multipage PDF's that are stored in it's container fields. Further complicating the mater filemaker pro for mac has a frequent problem crashing on larger files when using Adobe as the default web plugin to view PDF files, thereby making it necessary to default to using "preview" for mac as the default reader. The problem with using preview though is that when certain documents were created originally using acrobat such as forms or PDFs with embedded pics, Preview will fail to recognize the data on the forms or the embedded pics thereby rendering a blank page, making its necessary to use Acrobat only to print the documents... Our solution requires us to batch print large amounts of documents from found sets within our database. Each record has a series of layouts that must be printed in a specific order and a collection of attachments (container fields) that must also be printed. Currently we are able to batch print all the filemaker layout documents in the proper sequential order for a batch, (Average 20 records per batch, each record having 10 pages = 200 Pages (without corresponding attachments) Because of filemaker's limitations however we must then manually go into each record, open each relevant attachment, right click to "open as" Adobe PDF, execute a print command, manually close the adobe window, manually close the filemaker container window and repeat for each relevant attachment per record.... As you can imagine this becomes very time consuming. To make matters more complicated we then have to hand collate the documents to insert the separately printed container PDF's and associate them with the other printed docs... We are trying to create scripting that will enable us to print the entire file in the proper sequential order so that it is pre collated. (i.e. Print 5 layouts, print container 1, print 3 layouts, print container 2, print 2 layouts, print containers 3 and 4) move to next record repeat... I believe one way to solve this is to export the PDF from the container field to a watch folder that would have an applescript attached to it and automatically print.. However I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to script a hot folder to print using the adobe engine. I have made hot folders that print using the default preview engine however this results in a blank document. These documents only seem to print correctly when printed from the print dialog of adobe reader or acrobat alone. I am open to any suggestions at this point...
  11. Hello all! This is an annoying issue. I am trying to setup a container data path in FMS 13 on OS X 10.9. The directory is on a FW drive. No matter what I try, the server saves the files in FMS /Library subfolders. Here are the steps that I have taken: 1. Set the container data path in FMS to filemaker:/FMMedia/Media/ and successfully saved the changes. 2. Made sure the drive (FMMedia) and the folder (Media) have full read/write permissions for the fm server user, and even made it the owner. To test, I even tried setting the permission to read/write for all users. 3. Set up the manage containers with the correct path. 4. If I test the file non-hosted in FM client, it works great and saves the files as expected. Once I host it, there is no error when inserting a file in the container, but the files are saved in the /Library FMS directories again. I have tried many variations and still am having no luck, even trying to setup a test folder on the root of the main drive. Thank you kindly for any responses :-)
  12. Viewing Container content Windows 7

I have a client system which includes the collection of proof of delivery signatures using iPhones. The system is hosted on a server. The client has a mixture of Macs, XP and now Windows 7 users. The signatures are copied from the iPhone sub system into the main database using a server side script on a regular schedule. The signatures are visible on macs using the system, and were also visible on PC's using XP, but since the client upgraded to Windows 7 the signatures show the icons of the signature file only on the upgraded PCs. Is there something I can do about this? I have tried changing the default viewer for .png files in Windows to other applications (e.g. Quicktime. This changes the icon visible in the container field to a quicktime icon but doesn't render the image.)
  13. Am I right in my understanding that currently the best practice would be to keep within a separate folder either the standard one or a user one instead of incorporating them into the database? That would make the database file smaller and less prone to corruption, as well as more manageable. My understanding also is that at the moment you can only keep such data in the same volume as the server is in, but correct me if I'm wrong.
  14. I hope someone can help me and clear things up. I have looked at other posts about this but still feel a bit befuddled. We recently converted to Filemaker 12 (we have FMS also). An Overview: We have a field called attachment, in the past the script Inserted a file reference to a PDF file. This database manages Service Tickets. When we email the ticket if there is a PDF in the Attachment field it goes along with it. When the Service Engineers scroll through their tickets they can double click on the Attachment Field and view the PDF if they wish. That being said, the new container options in FM12 seemed appealing. No worry about where the file originated, it would be stored in the external storage in the Filemaker Storage directory and we didn't need to worry about file paths. I changed the attachment field to used the external storage option (Open). Then did the Manage>Containers>Transfer Data. Problems (or perhaps my confusion) 1. Now when we double click on the Attachment field, it does nothing a PDF doesn't display. Is that because I transferred the data. Previously the script they clicked for inserting the PDf used Insert>File>We store a reference only. Should I change the script to Insert PDF? Will the data be stored externally. 2. Also I thought from what I read that when you change a container field to external storage it creates a directory under the FMS>Databases>Container Field Name? I think I might not follow what I read about containers and i have read it multiple times! LOL 3. We also store photos in container fields. I changed them to external Open storage also. is there a way to double click on an image stored in a container to make it open in a preview mode? Any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much, maybe I can't see the forest for the trees!!! Caroline
  15. Sorry if I am not posting this question in the right place- i can't figure out where to post what. Anyways... I have 4 tabs and each tab holds a container field to hold PDFs. what i WANT to happen is if the container has a PDF, for the tab to be a different color. So i can tell which of the 4 tabs have a PDF without clicking through them. I am assuming i can do this with conditional formatting (if COA does not equal blank, make fill color green) - but i can't seem to get it to work. Thoughts? I tried using the VerifyContainer calculation but that did not work either. Thanks ahead of time! ...and Im psuedo beginner, so simple language please.
  16. Video streaming Problem

Hello, I am running Filemaker pro advanced 12 on windows 7 I have been searching allover the internet for an answer to this question but i can seem to find exactly what i am looking for. I am now using forums as my only hope. I am really new at all this and I am presently working on a project for a client. Basically, I am trying to create a video database for a production company that will allow every computer in the office to acces, add, remove and download different videos within a database that i have created in our server. I have developed the database template but I am having problems with reading videos from the other computers. After importing the video files in the file container (on the server) i can read without any problem the videos on the server. BUT, on the other computers and the Filemaker go apps, after opening a remote connexion, in the container field, it is written '' This file cannot be found''. I am pretty sure this has something to do with a misuse of the new features of the remote file containers but what options exactly do i need to enable in order to acces and read the videos from other computers, ipads or ipods. Is this problem because of the fact that i am not using filemaker server which im pretty sure allows streaming, unlike FM pro advanced 12. Can we acces, read or stream video files hosted on a server from another computer or ipad or iphone? Using FM pro advanced 12 If possible, can somebody guide me to succes? Thank you in advance!
