  1. How can I count the amount of lines in a text field? And is there a way to get a live update of the line count while typing in the field without it slowing down or interrupting the typing?
  2. I would appreciate a little help as my head is getting sore from banging it! I have a 4 tables Students - pkStudentID, also contains name address etc Classes - pkClassID, also date etc SC_JoinTable - fkStudentID, fkClassID, fkCarnetID, payment method, payment amount so far they are working ok, and I can have students attending many classes, as well as each class with multiple students. Where I get stuck is how to structure my last table. Carnets - pkCarnetID, fkStudentID A carnet is a bulk purchase of Classes, in this instance of 6 classes (although that may change in the future) What I want to do is have a CarnetStatusField that switches to "inactive" once the student has attended all 6 (or Xnumber) classes. I have a portal that shows the Classes::Date, etc... where SC_JoinTable::fkClassID = Classes::pkClassID and SC_JoinTable::fkCarnetID = Carnets::pkCarnetID I can't seem to find a way to count the number of records in the portal. Am I missing something simple or is my logic crazy?
  3. I have two files (among others) in my database: 'Users' and 'Questions'. Users has one entry per user. One of the fields is a timestamp with the last date/time the user logged on. Questions has one entry for every question asked in a forum. It has a timestamp field that indicates when the question was asked. I want to be able to count the number of questions that were asked for each user since that user last logged on. I set up a new calculated field in Users with the following: If( Questions::InsertedDate>PresentLoginDate; Count ( Questions::InsertedDate );"") My logic is to count the number of instances of InsertedDate in Questions where the date the question was inserted was more recent that the user's last login (as stored in PresentLoginDate). Thank you in advance for a solution! I've searched for related topics but come up short.

  6. I've done a lot of searching on this and can't find a solution. All I need to do is count how many records in one field has the word "clacorp.org" and also the word "sadccf.org". The field only has two allowable entries, which are: "clacorp.org" and "sadccf.org". I would like to get a count of the "clacorp.org" entry and put the number count in one field and get the count of "sadccf.org" and put the number in another field. I tried: ValueCount( FilterValues( List( domain_name); "sadccf.org")) and other caulations but can not get the numbers I need. I am only using one table. I need to know how many clacorp.org emails and how many sadccf.org emails. Seems simple but I am stumped.
  7. Hi everybody. Im trying to figure out how to make a count of my grouped records before exporting them. I would like a count of grouped records grouped by sender, receiver and charge off to. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time (:
  8. While creating a database that has Products, Suppliers and Lines I have come across the need to calculate a count of the suppliers from the context of a Products record. My relationship is like so: My question if I want to pull a lot of information about Supplier is should my portal in the Products record be from Suppliers or from Lines? If the best answer is Lines, could I still have a count of related Suppliers by using the primary key from that table in the portal? Is it a bad idea to use fields from a related tables portal other than its own? Thanks
  9. Hi Everybody, I have a text field with a text that contains normal and red-bold characters, I would like to count the number of characters with bold style. Could anyone help me to do this operation with a function? I am trying to do an script that extracts the portion of normal text to calculate the length and then calculate the number of total characters minus normal text. What is the best option? a function or an script? Thank you very much, Wardiam
  10. Hi, I have a simple correspondence database with three tables: Contacts (called PEO), Correspodence (called peo_peocoo_COO), and a joint table called peo_PEOCOO. In Contacts, one of the fields is Country. I need to give a single number of how many countries has received correspondence from my team, so I wanted to count number of countries (not the number of times each country has ocurred) in the joint table. I am however having difficulty at using the methods commonly posted in the forums and would really appreciate some assistance. As an example, I have China China Japan China US Japan UK UK The number I would expect from the above is 4 - Four countries have received our correspondence in the past. I've tried using the ExecuteSQL method by creating a calculation field ("SELECT COUNT (DISTINCT Country) FROM peo_PEOCOO" ; "" ; ""). I however ended up with a question mark in every record. I've tried the "sum the reciprocal" method, creating, in peo_PEOCOO, a summary field CountryCount (which resulted in total number of records), a caculation field FractionOfCountryCount (which shows number of times each country has ocurred), and another summary field FinalCountryCount (which resulted in the sum of number of times each country has ocurred). Still couldn't get the number of countries in the peo_PEOCOO table. Finally, I tried "self join" method, creating a second peo_PEOCOO_SelfJoin, creating a calculation field in peo_PEOCOO called Counter, which is Count(peo_PEOCOO_SelfJoin::Country), and a summary field called CounterTotal which is a Total of Counter. It ended up again with the sume of number of times each country has ocurred. I would grateful if the community can help point out what went wrong in all my methods. A great many thanks for your time and help. Cheers, The MacGuffin
  11. I am using FM 12.04 Advanced  I have a membership application.  Members -->> Dues  The LO is based on Dues     The problem is I can not get a Summary Count for Members::MemDuesStatus (Current or Late). I have placed the summary field in Dues. Didn't work. I placed the Summary field in Members. Didn't work.  The perplexing thing is that the Blue fonted Summary Totals work?  Is there something different about Count?  Â
  12. I am working with INT and MOD functions to generate receipts. For example an amount splitted into 5 receipts. The first 4 have the highest integer and the 5th has the remainder. What I would like to accomplish is to show through a portal a calculation field with the result. I have made a sample file to explain my idea. As always, thank you very much for your help. 13. Hi! I have two separate questions regarding portals and how they work. Before I start let me describe what I'm doing. I'm constructing DB for local karate club. I have one table/layout with general info about members, I have second table/layout with records about belts (including color of the belt, when & where the belt was obtained, the mentor of the member & sparing partners of the member etc.) and I have 3rd table/layout that shows various activities of each member (there are also several other tables but not important for this topic). All tables are connected via key field (ID number) QUESTION 1 I have no problem creating portals on 3rd layout to show me which belts particular member has with all additional info from the second table that go along with it. BUT I don't know how to create a portal that shows all members of the club that had particular member as sparing partner. Thing is that I have 3 separate fields for sparing partner because each member can have up to 3 sparing partners and I simply don't know how to connect them all so I can see the list of all members that have particular member as one of three possible sparing partners. QUESTION 2 I know how to place count of related records in filtered portal but I'm not sure how to get a Total of this counts. Any help is much appreciated!
  14. Have a passenger list and next to their name it has 'adult', 'child' or 'infant' in a drop down list. At the bottom I wish to summarise the booking schedule so the person reading the report can see how many times 'adult' was selected for example. The following is in a portal: Age Bracket, First Name, Last Name, etc etc (Adult, Child, Infant), (First Name), (Last Name) etc etc At the bottom of the screen I wish to have: Adults: x Children: x Infants: x Thank you in advance. I love using this forum to learn!
  15. I'm a relatively new FM user but have been forced to hit the ground running and am doing my best to learn along the way. This particular problem is giving me some trouble. In generic terms, I have several fields in each record that have multiple possible responses (e.g. "Completed", "Incomplete", "Pending Data"). I would like to keep a running count of these responses for all records in the database - one for each field of interest. So basically, I can already look at the summary page for each individual record and see which tasks need to be completed, but I also want to be able to look at the database globally and use the existing data to say "X number of records still need this task completed" (i.e. "X number of records show this field entered as other than "Completed"). I have tried creating a Summary (Count) field in the layout, but I keep returning "0" as the calculated result. More importantly, I want to be sure I'm counting the number of times each individual response is selected and not just the number of times the field is completed in some way. I contemplated creating a second related checkbox to auto-fill if the field indicates the task is incomplete and then count the number of filled-in checkboxes in the database for each field (thereby compressing the value list to yes/no for the main point of interest only), but this is less detailed information than I would like and seems like more work than it should be. Plus, I am reticent to create dummy fields like this if more effective ways to do the same thing exist. Can anyone help? Bear in mind, I'm relatively new to this program, so please be gentle with me!
  16. Hello all, I'm working on a research study and am trying to track enrollment over the course of the study, both by week and by month. My current model for tracking summary fields has worked fine for more contained variables with fewer outcomes, but this one demonstrates the naivete of my model. MY GOAL: Track the number of participants that enroll each week (or month) over time and plot a bar graph of enrollment per time period over time. MY METHOD TO DATE (I'm new): I have assigned each record an integer to code for the "study week" in which they were enrolled. That is to say, if they were enrolled in the first week of the study, the variable "ASSIGNStudyWeek" would be 1 and so on. I already have a great way of designating that via a single variable. However, I have not yet come across a good way to count the number of like variable responses since all of the variables in the database (which I inherited, and did not design) use a single value list with multiple values. That is to say, instead of creating a separate variable for "male" and "female", there is a single variable "sex", from which a record can either be marked "male" or "female". Because a summary field that counts "sex" cannot distinguish between these answers (that I know of...), I create a new field (MARK) for each value to indicate if it was selected. So MARKMale uses a calculated if statement that returns 1 if it was selected and 0 if not. I can then use a summary field (COUNTMale) to get a count of how many records store that value and use the result for further analysis using getsummary() functions in related calculations. THE ISSUE: This study will have 300 study weeks before it ends. So this means for my previous method to work, I would need to create a MARK and COUNT field for EVERY SINGLE study week. This seems preposterous and as I said, demonstrates my naivete as a programmer. I would like to design a partner variable for "ASSIGNStudyWeek" that can recognize every possible outcome (1-300) and count the number of records for each value, which would then be a count of newly enrolled participants for that week. IT GETS BETTER: I also need to create a way of tracking GROWTH, and not just total study enrollment. Therefore, it seems like I need to create a calculation this: [ "GROWTHWeek" = GetSummary ( COUNTStudyWeek ( N ) ; Study Week ) - GetSummary ( COUNTStudyWeek (N-1) ; Study Week ) ] The problem is, I don't know how to address the "N" in this equation. I don't know if FM has a way to reference variables in this way. And if so, I'm not sure if "N-1" will actually do what I want, since the calculation is built into the actual field name. So I know that this formula is impossible (highly likely). What is a better alternative? I thought about creating a second variable like ASSIGNPriorStudyWeek as described above (from 0-299), then just substitute that into the second term above. In short, I'm in WAY over my head. I've never coded before in my life and I've only been using FileMaker for a month. So given that I've tried everything I know, I'm turning to you for help. Sorry for the long post. I'd rather give ALL the details now so I can get an appropriate answer rather than go back and forth filling in the blanks over the course of a few weeks. THANK YOU!!!!!
  17. I have a layout that includes two sub-summaries. The topmost includes a summary field called studentGradeCount, which counts the number of students in a given grade. The subordinate sub-summary contains applicationStatusCount, which is a summary field providing a count of applicationStatus. Adjacent to the status count, I would like to provide a percentage, indicating what percent of the students have applications at each status. Logically, it would be applicationStatusCount / studentGradeCount But FileMaker doesn't return anything when I attempt this. Any help would be appreciated. FMPA 16.0.3 macOS 10.13.3
  18. Hi, using a "count of id" summary field in the enclosing layout/table I can get the current total number of rows in the portal based on the portal relationship. But I have three or four filters defined in the portal so that the portal only shows a subset of this total. How can I possibly get the correct number of portal rows that are displayed at any time — outside of the portal on the enclosing layout? Preferably in a global field? I can insert a Record Number Symbol on each portal row that displays the current record number down to the last number. That works fine. But I can't get this value into the enclosing layout/table, whatever means I try. I could probably use a couple of ExecuteSQL queries (one for each case), but because my filters are quite complex these would be also very complex and cumbersome, especially because SQL treats the data a little bit differently than FileMaker (empty fields vs NULL fields, etc.). Any suggestions how to achieve this? Thanks a lot! Gary
  19. Hi, everyone! In my database of weekly music charts (FMPro14) there are 4 linked tables: [Hits] - list of the hit singles [Entries] - list of different entries, remixes, reissues [Runs] - list of chart placings for every week [Dates] - list of dates of the weekly charts —————————————————————————————— [Hits] contains: <idHits> index field <Title> text field [Entries] contains: <idEntries> index field <Title> text field <idHits_fk> number field, a foreign key which links [Hits] table with [Entries] table [Runs] contains fields as below: <idRuns> index field <Place> number field, position on the chart <LastWeek> number field, last week position <idDates_fk> number field, a foreign key which links [Dates] table with [Runs] table <Title> text field, title of a single <Name> text field, name of the artists [Dates] contains: <idDates> index field <Date> date field —————————————————————————————— Relations are as follows. [Hits] & [Entries] are linked by the relation: Hits.<idHits> = Entries.<idHits_fk> [Entries] & [Runs] are linked by the relation: Entries.<idHits> = Runs.<idEntries_fk> [Dates] & [Runs] are linked by the relation: Dates.<idDates> = Runs.<idDates_fk> —————————————————————————————— Two years ago, on this forum, with a Consultant help, I have defined the self-join as: Runs::idEntries_fk = Runs 2::idEntries_fk AND Runs::idDates_fk ≥ Runs 2::idDates_fk where Runs 2 is a new occurrence of the Runs table. Then define a calculation field (result is Number) = Count ( Runs 2::idRuns ) This will return the number of times the entry has appeared in the Runs table before (and including) the current week. So this allows counting chart weeks for every record in [Entries]. Now, I’d like to also count TOTAL number of weeks, for [Hits], not [Entries], something like: Runs.<Place>; Runs.<LastWeek>; Entries.<Title>, TotalWeeksCount for main record in [Hits] —————————————————————————————— Example. Let’s say there is a hit single titled „Purple Rain”. Looking at its chart history we should get something like: Purple Rain - original entry - 10.10.1984 - 10 (0) 1 week Purple Rain - original entry - 17.10.1984 - 8 (10) 2 weeks … Purple Rain - original entry - 14.12.1984 - 43 (33) 10 weeks — out of chart — Purple Rain - re-entry - 08.07.2008 - 56 (Null) 11 weeks *** 11 weeks, NOT 1st week of this new entry! *** Purple Rain - re-entry - 15.07.2008 - 48 (56) 12 weeks How can I get such results? Help needed, thanks!
  20. Hello fellow Filemakers I have been trying to come up with a dynamic count calculation for a number of portals all relating to the one table in vs 11. These portals are navigated to via tabs so I do have a reference for the count relationship by way of the tab's unique object name. Now this is very easy if I create a count calculation field for each portal but not so easy if I try to create the one count calculation using Case. It all works if I have one level of tabs but I have nested tabs and I can't figure out how to solve this one. So this is an example calculation for the field "Count". Case ( GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab A1" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab A Count(portalrelationshipA1::fieldnameA1) ; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab A2" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab A Count(portalrelationshipA2::fieldnameA2) ; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab B1" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab B Count(portalrelationshipB1::fieldnameB1) ; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab B2" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab B Count(portalrelationshipB2::fieldnameB2) ; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab C1" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab C Count(portalrelationshipC1::fieldnameC1) ; GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( "Tab C2" ; "IsFrontTabPanel" ); //nested in Tab C Count(portalrelationshipC2::fieldnameC2) ; "" ) The reasons behind wanting to approach the problem this way is that; a. I have many tables requiring this functionality so I want to keep the number of fields down in each table. b. The case calculation is easily expandable as I continue developing the overall solution. At the moment the calculation only returns the Tab A - Tab A1 or A2 counts after navigating to Tab B - Tab B1 or B2, Tab C - Tab C1 or C2 (depending on which Tab A - nested tab is front). If I navigate to say Tab A3 with no reference in the calculation then Tab B1 and B2 start to work and so on. Anyone know how I can more precisely identify the nested tab object so that the calculation works? Script trigger maybe? Attached is an example file that helps to clarify what I am referring to. Hope someone can help. example_portalcount.fp7.zip
  21. I'm trying to automate the creation of records in a table based on data from a related table. In this database, each Component has any number of Carriers. The Component has a unique number, six digits followed by a dash and an additional digit, such as 123456-1. In the Component table, the Carriers field is set to hold the number of Carriers, as entered by the user. Once this field is completed, I would like the script to automatically create a sequentially numbered set of records for the Carriers in the Carriers table. The Carrier numbering scheme is based on the Component number, and reflects the number of Carriers entered in the Carriers field in the Component table. For example, if the Carrier were numbered 123456-1 and I entered "6" in the Carriers field in the Component table, 6 Carrier records, numbered 123456-1-1, 123456-1-2...123456-1-6 would be created. I think I have the basic idea for how to script this, but I'm stuck. I know I need to set variables for the Component number and the number of Carriers in the Component table, then move to the Carriers table and create the number of records to match the $$CarriersNumber variable I set, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do this. As an additional requirement, I need the number of Carrier records to maintain its connection to the value of the Carriers field in the Component record. If the user enters 6 and the script creates the records, but the user later learns there are actually 7 (or 5) Carriers, I'd like the script to be able to create or delete the related record as it goes. This probably won't happen often, but if it does, the script's ability to maintain the relationship between the Carrier field data and the number of associated Carrier records would be useful. Thanks for any help with this challenge.
