  1. Hello peeps, I'm just getting to grips with Filemaker 14, skipped 13 so this is the first time I've had the opportunity to play with the popovers which I've been much looking forward to. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised that data entry hasn't been made much easier with the advent of popovers. Creating a data entry interface is certainly easier and looks good too, but the process of entering new record criteria and confirming or cancelling the process is much the same. Currently I use global fields to place on a popover and when data entry is confirmed scripts will: Copy the entered data to a new record, field by fieldClear all global fields used for entryor Cancel and clear global fieldsHowever this takes more script writing the more fields you have and can be approached in many different ways from a control perspective. Before I was doing this, I instinctively wanted to do away with the global 'Entry' fields mirroring actual data fields and instead; create a new record when launching a data entry popover, the fields are probably the same as those already on the layout but only the new blank record has focus, and the new procedure be: Commit recordor Cancel and delete recordThis would, at least in some scenarios be suitable and requires less development overhead because cancelling requires only that the record is deleted and the committing is already done by the user (as long as the record isn't cancelled or validation fails...). ...Yet you can't do this using popovers. Creating a record cancels a popover, end of. The button that launches a popover can't be set to create a record either so I'm stuck with my old methods. Does this actually bother many people? I thought this would be a common functional desire but haven't found much to read on data entry approaches in Filemaker ...what alternative approaches do other people use? Lee
  2. L&G, I have read the guidelines for posts in this forum. Therefore I did not enter the Post title that came first in mind: Do I understand portals (aka do I understand Filemaker) and I do not emphasize now on being new in Filemaker issues. I am trying to achieve something simple at a first step of a big plan: Entering recipes in a Filemaker testversion database. The longterm goal should be a database in which I can enter my collected recipes. Followed by tool for a weekly menu plan for my family and a shopping list coming out of the database after taking care of my fridge's stock => so far so good, but currently this is a plan for the next ten years I realized starting with Filemaker. I searched different apps and database programs, and Filemaker seems to be my solution as I did not find anything that fits exactly my expectations. So back to the first problem: how to enter my recipes? I created a table of recipes with an unique ID_pk (I learned already about pk and fk), Name and How-To-Make-it as well as IDs(fk) from the other tables which are Zutaten (Ingredients) with the name and the amount, Form_Zutaten (how the ingredients are used i.e. chopped, sliced, etc.) and Einheit_Zutaten (unit i.e. cup, liter, etc.). Why I have choosen this structure: because all ingredients must be combinable with different units and how the are used. otherwise I have to enter e.g. avocado sliced, avocado mashed, etc. or make rules like liquids can only be liter or mililiter or cups while flour can only be gramms etc. So a combination of all three tables should be possible. What I though might be an easy task is to create a recipe layout than with recipe ID recipe name and a dynamic portal depending on the number of ingredients constisting of: Zutat - Form - Menge - Einheit in english: Name of the ingredient - how is it, which kind/form - how much (qty) - which unit so I related the tables via pk and fk, created the layout and bam: complete disaster. after needing a couple of days to make the values appearing in the dropdown (learned about the value list), some fields in the portal do show the all entries of the ingredients, while the kind/form and unit fields do always show the first value of the table? and although I locked the fields, the first entry is always shown and is getting overwritten by the choice I choose from the dropdown... and nothing is dynamic, meaning that 7 ingredients will make 7 lines and it always starts with one empty line, etc. I am not sure if my descriptions do make sense, therefore I am attaching my work, hoping someone could help me with how to use the portal for a convenient data entry. thx in advance! br HJS 2017_09_Essensplan.fmp12
  3. Hi, I have being trying to work this out, but I am finding the following problem: - I would like to have a field that would contain info about account numbers for payments. However, the account number should be generated when it is feeded from the combinations of 5 different fields which should contain a max. number of characters, such as 4. When entering the data into these fields the desire behaviour should be that if I am in field 1 and write the first 4 characters, when I enter the 5th one then it should jump to the next field. I have seen this for example when you enter a serial number for a software or at online banking when asking to write the IBAN number. So far, I have set the max. number of character for each of the sub fields as 4, but when I enter the data and exceed the max. number of characters I get a pop up message saying if I would like to overwrite this validation. The question here would be if it would be possible that instead of getting a warning saying that I am exceeding the max. number of characters, it would just jump to the next field. Thanks a lot! Luis
  4. Many companies with both HubSpot and FileMaker find themselves ending up having to do double data entry from one system to the next. We will demonstrate how you can eliminate the hassle of manually copying the information by integrating your FileMaker solution with HubSpot. FileMaker HubSpot Integration
  5. Hello, I'm a relative newbie to databases and Filemaker - so please excuse me if there is a really easy answer to this that I am not aware of. So... here is my scenario: Purpose of database: to link together people, organisations, evidence (i.e., pieces of information relating to people, organisations, or the relationships between people-org, people-people, org-org). I won't bring all the tables into this discussion as one the problem has been solved in one area, it is solved everywhere. So, taking this particular instance: My tables are: People: __pkPersonID, title, firstName, surname, AKA, fullName, DOB, DOD, information, notes Organisation: __pkOrgID, orgName, founded, terminated, notes JOIN_people_organisation: __pkJOINtableID, _fkPersonID, _fkOrgID, relationshipDescription, notes Note - the JOIN table is there because there will be many-to-many relationships My situation is this. I will have a large number of people, a large number of organisations and the need to continually add new people and new organisations - plus the ability to add either/or during the creation of a new relationship between them. Here's some fake data (not relevant to my database) People: 1, John Lennon 2, Paul McCartney 3, Ringo Starr 4, Mick Jagger 5, Kurt Cobain 6, Courtney Love 7, Alan Klein 8, Bill Geffen Organisations 1, The Beatles 2, The Rolling Stones I create a layout based on the JOIN table with the aim of creating relationships. This is where my problem starts. I add my first relationship, an easy one - John Lennon, The Beatles PROBLEM 1: how do I remember the _fkPersonID that relates to John Lennon without leaving the layout and noting it down? Is there a way of creating a live 'search' field within the layout that lets me search for a person to see if (a) they already exist and ( if they do, to then populate the relevant fields. PROBLEM 2: I'm looking at this from the reverse. I decide to add George Harrison to my database. So, I assume an easy way to do this would be to go to the JOIN table layout, search for The Beatles, populate one field with the relevant _fkOrgID (associated with The Beatles) and then add, presumably in another set of related fields or a portal, George Harrison as a new record in the People table that relates to this? PROBLEM3: For example. Say I was looking at a new type of relationship. Still an organisation, but say this was 'association of 60's legendary musicians'. So, I add this to the Organisation table. I then go to the JOIN layout and 'search' for this, populate the field with the relevant foreign key. Then I want to start adding people to this relationship. ... search for Paul McCartney, add him as a relationship ... search for Mick Jagger, add him.. ... search for Dave Crosby.. he's not there, so ADD Dave Crosby ... ADD Bob Dylan ... search for Ringo Starr, add him. Etc. You can see why I am looking for this solution as it makes the data entry side of things much more useful. Especially if other people add to the database to build more records and more relationships. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I've tried all sorts of key words to find an answer on google. Looked through Lynda.com, missing manuals etc. Thanks in advance
