  3. Hi all, many thanks for reading my post. I am working on a project with my sister who currently builds our databases at work with filemaker. We are working on a website together for release in late 2014 or early 2015. As with all websites, there's a frontend and a backend. We would like to develop the backend "usernames, passwords, user data, dates, times, data fields etc" within a filemaker database (that my sister can build), and then have a professional web programmer build the frontend using javascript or html 5 or something similar. I have a few questions: 1) Is this a stupid path to go down factoring in growth and scalability? If, hypotheically the website grew to 1000's of people a day (I'm sure it wouldn't!) but, would a filemaker hosted (pointinspace.com etc) backend be able to cope with the large amount of information requests from a javascript web frontend in a speedy manner? ie, I wouldn't really wonder why the page took 10+ seconds to load? 2) As 99% of web hosts don't host filemaker files, we would have to split front end hosting and backend hosting between a normal host (bluehost, godaddy etc) for the frontend and a filemaker host (pointinspace.com, worldcloud.com etc) for the backend. Could that be a huge lag potential? 3) If we went down this path, how to the two connect? Is the best connection between a full website and filemaker database just PHP? or are other connection methods preffered from small strings of data (no images etc, just data fields). 3) Should we just grow a pair, give up on FM and develop the backend in MySQL or something similar? We are so close to starting the project, but I'm really struggling to find information on large scale websites that actually host the user data on a filemaker server backend, that get the speeds you would expect from a standard website. Would love whatever help you could throw my way! Many thanks, Simon

Portal with four fields from different tables

Hello there. First of all im newbie in fm. I use the filemaker 16. I want to make a new base that keeps track of pages and especially registerstations and log ins. So i created 5 tables: "sites, user_names, passowrds, emails and account_descripion) I linked the tables with relationships. I created a portal witch have fields from three different tables, a field user_name from table user_names, a field password form table passwords and a field email from emails table. When i insert the first line(raw) in the portal ιτ seems to work. but if i try to insert values in the second line (say in a site you vave two accounts like facebook one ofiicial and the other one "a fake account") it seems that something is not working properly. I upload a 3m12sec video to show you what i mean. Please check it if you have the time. Also, the source file that im working on is in this link (filemaker 16 file): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zW1jC6-dL1I9zEplo7Xw0dL3Wy8onKkl Thanks for your time

  12. Hi everyone, I am new here. I just began working with a project that has been using FileMaker Server 9 and Pro 9. The current architecture uses one machine deployment but the machine is quite ancient and doesn't support any micro-frameworks that eases my web development duties. I wanted to split this architecture to a multi machine deployment this ancient machine having only the Database, another better machine having a webserver and/or a web publishing engine. The reasoning behind this being that I can use a webserver(Gunicorn + Flask) and use PyFileMaker to obtain my data from the DB using XML. I, however, realize that the web publishing engine is required at the database to publish my XML data which in turn requires a web server running(apache). This goes back to the same one machine deployment. Am I missing a point here? Thank you so much for taking your time to read this. It would be truly awesome if you could help me with this question. Thank you once again and have a good day. Regards, Arjun

  15. I've been developing with FileMaker for a long time and I've always specialized in eBay and PayPal integration. I've got a pretty good reputation in the PayPal community (I got the star developer award in 2008, 2009, and 2011) and I've finally taken the time to develop a set of custom functions for FileMaker that give you direct access to PayPal's API's. I wish I would have done this years ago as it's already saved me loads of time. Get it Now The solution consists of a simple FileMaker database that when loaded, populates your External Functions with a bunch of custom functions that coincide with PayPal's API's. Just like any other function in FileMaker, all you have to do is populate the function parameters and it will take care of the rest for you. API calls included so far are: AddressVerify BillOutstandingAmount CreateRecurringPaymentsProfile DoAuthorization DoCapture DoDirectPayment DoNonReferencedCredit DoReauthorization DoReferenceTransaction DoVoid GetBalance GetBillingAgreementCustomerDetails GetRecurringPaymentsProfileDetails GetTransactionDetails ManagePendingTransactionStatus ManageRecurringPaymentsProfileStatus MassPay RefundTransaction TransactionSearch UpdateRecurringPaymentsProfile I will be adding more API's very soon to cover the rest of their web services, including Adaptive Payments. Right now all I have is the quick intro video on how it's used, but I'll be adding more detailed videos and documentation in the near future. Feedback is appreciated!
  16. Hi! I have this persistant problem when I try to import my XLM data into filemaker. I use various XML inportations in my filemaker database and they all import perfect with the msdso_elem.xslt file, but not this xml type! I don't know what I'm doing wrong... I made this XSLT document, but when I try to import it, the actual record fields are empty!!! 17. Last September I wrote an article about a custom function that I optimized to evaluate hundreds times faster. At the end of the article, I challenged my readers and myself by claiming that the already optimized custom function can be optimized even further. Do you remember? Later on I actually really optimized it again, and talked about this optimization during my session at Pause On Error [x] London 2011. Now you can watch the video of this part of my session below: Read more and download my updated sample file at honza.24uSoftware.com.

  20. Placeholder text is a great new feature in FileMaker 14. With it you can specify by calculation what label text is to appear in a field that is empty. You can also have complete control over the styling of that text. In this article we demonstrate how to setup a placeholder and some of its benefits over standard labels. We also show how placeholder text can be used as a powerful user interface tool for displaying virtually any calculated value direct on a layout without the need for fields or variables.
