  1. Mostly posting this to hear myself talk but maybe someone will find it useful or a helpful discussion will ensue... My company has deployed a FileMaker solution over iPads for our sales staff. Because they are frequently in locations with no or poor reception, their solution is offline. They sync on demand when they have a connection and can select what they want to sync. My company is also one of those that doesn't like to buy anything. So I had to make my own solution to sync. The trouble is, our sales staff isn't always the best about syncing and sometimes if they select all options it can take up to two hours to complete a sync! I went to DevCon this year with a main goal of improving the sync speed. I came back with several ideas and these are the results. Currently, my solution is set up with a separate connector file. I did this because in the past I kept having issues with corruption of the main file. It would happen regularly but ever since I switched to using a connector file it has nearly disappeared. Hurray for that! The connector file has table occurrences for the server files and the local files and uses those relationships for finding the records to update. I then do a simple Import Records:Update Matching to update the data (in most cases, sometimes I do loop through and "set field" if the data is especially important). I talked to a bunch of people and attended several sessions about FMGo and the overwhelming feeling seemed to be "NO, BAD DAN!" and I left with my head swimming with ideas of PerformScriptOnServer and looping through records and payload files. Fun. First, I did some benchmarking. With my original script I got the following sync times for five different segments (some are just one table, some are multiple): Customers: 6 seconds Inventory: 3 minutes 32 seconds Orders: 2 minutes 59 seconds Inventory Master: 3 minutes 58 seconds Pricing: 27 seconds I then went in and changed all of the syncs to loop through the records and "Set Field". I had it set all fields because it was even longer if I had it first evaluate if it needed to do a set field. Customers: 2 seconds Inventory: 23 minutes 58 seconds Orders: 2 minutes 10 seconds Inventory Master: 43 seconds Pricing: 3 seconds So I had some luck in a few places but absolutely atrocious for the Inventory sync. A couple of things to note: there were a couple of tables that I was just syncing everything instead of what was new. I believe that was the case for the Customers sync in particular. Also, the big thing for the inventory master is that it has product pictures in it. I learned about Base64 encoding and decoding at DevCon and I'm sure that was the winning ticket for making that sync go faster. I'm guessing even the import version would go quicker if I was to use that instead of importing the large picture files. Since the data changes regularly, I wanted to be sure that I had good numbers to work with. I was telling the script to sync 10 days worth of changes. I reran the benchmarking today to different results (this time it was over wireless instead of cellular because I was running out of data on my plan): Old Script: Customers: 2 seconds Inventory: 12 seconds Orders: 31 seconds Inventory Master: 8 minutes 59 seconds Pricing: 15 seconds New Script: Customers: 4 seconds Inventory: 2 minutes 35 seconds Orders: 1 minute 24 seconds Inventory Master: 13 seconds Pricing: 6 seconds On the whole, it would seem that looping with set field is not a good method if you want speed. Of course you can argue it is more reliable so there's a trade-off. I wanted to experiment with running the query on the server and then sending over just data for the Inventory sync (about 1700 records). I used PerformScriptOnServer to pass the date to be synced. I had the server find the records I needed then loop through them and capture the data into a variable. I then set that into a data table field. The iPad copied over the data and I had it. But now what to do with it??? First I tried unpacking it into a temp table and then using Import to update the data. 5m 10s. Ok, that's twice as long. I then unpacked it directly into the table to update by querying the item ID. I update the data if found and added it if it wasn't (wasn't even concerned with deletions at this point). 9m 1s. That's going the wrong way!! So, with the exception of making sure I sync only the records that were changed and using Base64 encode/decode for pics it looks like I'll be sticking with the import function. One good thing is that the two users I've switched over to FMGo 14 are saying syncing is going a little quicker than when they were on FMGo 13.
  2. Hello Forum, I have scheduled a script that i expect to search for a running tour(on current date) and creates and invoice for that tour. The server gives a notification that that script ran but when i check the database, there are no records created. Also the script ran just fine initially and suddenly that began to happen, without any alterations. Anybody aware of a situation like this with server scheduled scripts and have an idea how to fix this. Thank you for your time and support. Miss-Amen.
  3. The first 10 scripts in a database used to be available by hitting Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2, etc. What has become of this?
  4. Hello everyone, The office that I work at currently has Filemaker 12 Pro and the the 12 Server; however, recently, we have made the decision of upgrading to both 14 Pro and 14 Server. Before we bought the actual server and the licences, we wanted to test out the trial version of both. We set up a server machine for the 14 Server, and downloaded the 14 Pro Trial on both the server machine and a client computer. We have tried hosting our current databases with the fmp12 extension on the 14 Server Trial, but we are having great problem with this. To be honest, I don't have any experience with servers, I have only worked with the Pro side of Filemaker, so I have absolutely no idea what is going on. What we tried doing was copying and pasting our databases to the server machine in a folder we dedicated for FM14 Server, and mapped the server to the folder. The databases show up on the activity tab, and have the status of "normal." We can't access these on the client machine, even though we have tried opening them remotely. Yesterday I also called the filemaker contact number, and the person there suggested that I setup the Pro Trial also on the server machine and open the database that we wanted to upload to the FM14 Server. They then told me to click on File-->Sharing-->Upload to Filemaker Server, then select the server, enter in the server admin information. I did all this, but I got an error saying "Connection failed." If someone could please help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
  5. Hi All! Relatively new to building filemaker solutions, but stuck on this problem that have me pulling my hair out!. I have a filemaker server 14 running on a Mac Mini os X 10.10 and I want to schedule a Filemaker script to run on the server that every night updates a table with new entries from a excel sheet that gets updated daily (in .xlsx format). The import records script works fine when I run the script locally on my laptop (filemaker pro 14) but when I schedule it to run on the server, it runs successfully every time and throws out no error codes. However the table does not get updated at all with any changes or new entries to the excel sheet. I have made sure that the file paths are correct and scripted a variable filepath to point to the correct file in the form of filemac:/Volume/Library/FileMaker Server/Data/Documents/filename.xlsx so that it can work on the server but still it does not work. Built a layout to capture what the script ($filepath was the variable file path, documentList was returned with Get (DocumentPathListing) ) was doing and it looked all correct. I have built a test solution to replicate the problem and attached it to this post ( username: admin, password: fm123 ) (removed the local reference to the file in the import record>specify file step, hence anyone helping to look through the file will have to input their own filepath there). I used buttons to have a script to launch the import script via PSoS and it also doesn't work. Seems to me that everything is running smoothly except that filemaker server looks at the target file but does not import any of the data into the table. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Cheers! 6. Hi all Since upgrading to FM14 we've experienced crashing (errors 1000 and 1026 in the error log). I thought perhaps it was to do with version 14 or .net or my scriptmaster plugin. However it appears to be to do with a filter that I had in place for a portal. It was probably just a coincidence that I had so many records that it was referring to by the time I did the FM14 upgrade. I can probably do without the portal altogether really, but was just curious as to what the problem might have been. The filter formula was: Cases Closed::Closed_TimeStamp > (Get(CurrentDate) - 30) The Cases Closed table has around 22,000 records. Any ideas what's wrong with this? Thanks
  7. Hi With the release of the FM14 product line we've had some questions from users about the compatibility of our plugins (the Address Book selector for data exchange between Apple's Contacts and FM and the Calendar plugin for data exchange between Apple's Calendar and FM) so I thought I'd better post the info here: Our plugins work in FM14, as long as you open FM14 in 32 bit mode. You can set FM14 to open in 32 bit mode by selecting the application, choose ‘Get Info’ and tick the box 'open in 32 bit mode'. Our installer does not install the plugin in the FM14 extensions folder yet, but you can drag it there manually, either by copying it from the extensions folder from an earlier version of FMP, or by copying it from the Froodware folder in the Applications folder. Note: sometimes the icon of the plugin might look like a folder, but the plugin will still work normally. Please note that if you work in Mac OSX 10.9x or 10.10x you need to give Filemaker Pro access to Contacts/Calendar when using our plugins. You can do so by going to your System Preferences->Security and Privacy and add Filemaker Pro to the list of applications that is allowed to access Contacts/Calendar. We will release an update soon that will install the plugin in the FM14 Extensions folder, and fixes the icon issue. We are looking into the 64 bit version of our plugins, but we do not have an estimated release date for this yet. Feel free to contact us in case you have questions about this. (info@froodware.com) Happy Filemakering! Froodware
  8. Has anyone had the following issue and might have a quick fix. I migrated client files from FM Server 13 residing on Mac Server to FM Server 14 residing on Windows Server. All went very well except one thing, which i would be grateful if someone could help me on. PREVIOUS STATE - The client had his files hosted on OX platform and with FileMaker 13 Server. - There is a container field in the records that would contain pdf files, these are 1 or more pages document files. - When the user dragged the file into the container field it would display as page thumbnail BOTH on Mac and Windows. AFTER THE MIGRATION TO WINDOWS SERVER - files still display thumbnails when dragged on MAC - the files are displaying FILE ICON when dragged into the container on WINDOWS. Tech boards are suggesting that Windows can not insert the file as picture into the FM container field, but there it happened before. Does anyone have any isight on this behaviour, is it documented anywhere? Thank you
  9. I am using Insert From URL to send HTTP GET request to my server and get the result. I have a function PING that returns 1 if the server is online, but it cannot returns 0 if it is not so I am catching the error on filemaker : Connection timed out; the timeout value is 60 seconds. Is there a way to reduce this timeout value so the user does not have to wait a minute to know that the server is offline ? Similarly, if a process takes too long to answer, is there a way I can timeout the Insert From URL command ?
  10. Hi Guys, I am having trouble with Find Operation getting slower and slower each day. There are some design consideration as per some articles i have read recently which i will be doing as well. I inherited this solution from another developer, Find is based on some Calculation fields which are based further on some other calculation fields (both calculation fields have 'Do not store results' option checked) I know its not the best of designs, i wanted to ask for any possible improvement to Find process as its getting clumsy now. I have indexed relevant fields though, data in the table isn't huge, around 2000 records with 50 fields but Find is based on unstored calculation fields mainly. Can PSOS be used in Find Operation? Is there any other thing i must do at the beginning. Thanks much,
  11. Wondering what the status of SuperContainer and DocuBin are for use with FileMaker 14? Been trying to get them configured on my dev FMS14 machine without a lot of luck yet.
  12. I'm using a web viewer to display a html webpage that allows the user to interact with it via java scripts. The web page works on a Mac running FM13 and FM14 with Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11. When I try to view the web page in a web viewer on Windows 7 running with IE11 installed, the webpage doesn't allow any interaction with the java scripts, and the web page renders incorrectly. I'm running FM13 and FM14 in Windows 7, and they both render the webpage incorrectly. When I copy the HTML out of FileMaker and paste it into a file and open it directly in IE11, I get a security warning on the bottom of the window that says "Internet Explorer restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls", when I click Allow, the page renders correctly. If the Allow button is not clicked, the page would render exactly like it does FileMaker's web viewer. So it looks like FileMaker is suppressing this popup and just showing the web page with the scripts disabled. I checked Internet Options in IE and all relevant scripting options are enabled, but every time I try to display the page in IE directly, I get the security warning. So I'm assuming if I can get the page to display in IE without the prompt I can get the page to display in FIleMaker. What options need to get set to allow the scripts to run? Why does it work on Mac OS X and not Windows 7?
  13. Hi Guys, I had been using FM EasySync for few months now, so it had been working fine till now. Without having any change in the table structure, i got the error " The attempt to push data into server has failed ( The mesage recevied rom the server was "852" ) 852 Error is : Cannot write a file to the external storage I believe this is related to container fileds I am using. There has been no change in the Container field options. They are still being stored "Externally" on the server with Open Storage option. Also there hasn't been any change on Server policies as well. I have no clue as to what could have cause this. Anyone having idea about this ?? Thanks much.
  14. I'm looking to create a script and place it in a button to exist on two layouts (BACKUP and MAIN), to accomplish the following when activated from either layout: Copy current ACCTNUMBER If current layout is MAIN then go to BACKUP layout and show the same ACCTNUMBER record. else if current layout is BACKUP then go to MAIN layout and show the same ACCTNUMBER record. ....I'm sure it's a no brainer but right now I'm totally missing some small step to start the script ....help?
  15. When I start the upload to FileMaker Server and it asks for me to enter my Admin Console name and password, I get "Connection failed." I'm using the same name & password that I use to log into the server console where it works. I have uploaded many files in the past but now it won't work. I'm using: Mac OS X 10.11.4 FileMaker Server FileMaker Pro Advanced 14.0.5 Thanks Gary
