  1. I just upgraded our FM Server and four workstations to FM 16 Server and FileMaker 16 User. I have been using FM15 User to update a solution in every way, including layout design since June 2016. The only function I could have used from Advanced was commenting out script lines, but I lived with it. FM16 User appears to have removed Fill Color and a few other selections when I right click on an object in layout mode. Is this correct? Or have they just moved that somewhere else? Or is this a way of telling us they don't want Users doing too much design work, so get a copy of Advanced?
  2. Hey, I want to use the same header on all my layouts in FileMaker Pro 15 Advanced but I can't seem to find a way to accomplish it. I read on Google and other forums that there is no way to do it, however the posts I found are all at least a year or two old. Did they add a way to do it in FileMaker 15 or do I still need to duplicate a layout to get the same header on a different one? Thanks in advance, Mike
  3. I'm brand new to Filemaker. I'm trying to figure out how to make a left menu area that will appear in all of my layouts for navigation purposes. To switch from layout to layout easily for the user when my application goes live. I'm not even sure if this is possible, but from what I'm reading, it looks like it may not be. Would there be a way to split a layout into two vertical sections, the left one being the menu (which I can duplicate on every layout if necessary, though that would be a pain), and the right area where the actual program interactions appear? I'm so new that I'm not even what the correct terminology is. Thanks!

I need a layout with larger number of text fields which may have long words .. currently words are being split randomly and overflowing into new lines .. eg .. for the word 'accordingly'; 'accordingl' comes on the first line and 'ly' comes on the second line. Is there a way that filemaker can hyphenate large words and insert breaks so that it breaks in a more clean manner ?
  5. This is getting frustrating: About ten percent of the time I open a file, all of the layouts are displaying in a font named Z@R701E.tmp or, less commonly, Z@R6FAB.tmp. If I close and reopen the file a number of times, the problem will sometimes self-correct and show the normal fonts (I only use Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman), but sometimes I have to go through every layout and reset the fonts. This only happens to my FMP 15 files - no other programs have been affected. I have attached a screen shot for clarification. Any ideas? Thanks, Guy Weird font example.pdf
  6. Layouts GONE

    I am beside myself. I got FMPro Advanced 14 and used it to redo a database. I worked extensively on the database fields, the value lists, and created lots and lots of calculations to create merged dialogues on the pages. After I did all of that, all by editing the pages that already existed, I created new layouts and used the button bar at the top and the tab-like sections below within each tab. I worked to transfer every bit of work I had done to the new layout and then deleted the old layouts. Each time, as we know, we have to move from one place to another, it prompts you to save, and I always do. It was in browse mode, as I demonstrated it. It was open and my computer froze today, not while I was using it. When I opened it, every single change I made to new layouts were gone and all of the old layouts were in the database. If I didn't know better, it is almost like I did a 'save as" just before making all of those changes and now the whole file containing the new changes is simply gone from my harddrive. I am so upset. How can this possibly happen?
  7. I've got multiple Filemake databases with 4m+ records each. I've created a layout which calculates a summary using a sort, Groups and Counts. This takes 10-15 seconds, which is OK. However, when I try to export this summary report to Excel it appears that Filemaker has to recalculate all the Groups & Counts, but for some reason this takes several hours. The last report took over 4 hours. I can't figure out how I can simply export or copy the summary report that Filemaker creates for the Layout? Please can someone provide assistance because I have another 20 similar reports to do and this will take me days instead of hours

I have been working with FM 13 and it has been a thorn in my side now for sometime that the old layout creation ability to have all fields added to a layout upon creation is gone now, or so at least I have discerned. My question is there a way to add all fields for a table in one action now to a layout without dragging each individual field on to the layout?
  9. I have 24 layouts that are populated with fields from multiple tables present in the relationship graph shown in the image below. (I realize this is not uncommon.) Is it possible to determine which layouts use each table? In other words, is it possible to identify which of the 24 layouts have fields from the table "Contacts", which of the 24 layouts have fields from the table "Contacts 3", which of the 24 layouts have fields from the table "Customers", etc.?   11. Placeholder text is a great new feature in FileMaker 14. With it you can specify by calculation what label text is to appear in a field that is empty. You can also have complete control over the styling of that text. In this article we demonstrate how to setup a placeholder and some of its benefits over standard labels.   13. I am currently updating a runtime solution that we have been using for 14 years, it is designed for crossplatform use. I am using Filemaker 13 advanced and doing my work on a Mac (Mavericks). When opening it in a windows enviroment the buttons/fonts look differently and aren't lined up correctly. I used fonts that are available on both platforms. I'm not sure what the solution is, I'm including screen shots as an example. Â Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. We are almost ready to roll out our solution. Â Thank you!   14. Hello, I hope this is the best place to post this. I'm new to the forums, but have plenty of experience with older versions of FileMaker. I'm currently supporting a database based on FileMaker 6 / Server 5.5... You heard me. It's a rather long story, but the short version is that we will likely be redesigning the database from the ground up using FileMaker 13 in the near future. I'm in the process of researching some of the many new features that have been introduced over the years, and have hit a roadblock when it comes to designing layouts. We have many different devices, with a variety of resolutions (almost entirely Windows PCs), and I would like to be able to design a single layout in a way that looks good and uses the whole screen on each workstation. What are some of my options without designing a separate layout for each resolution in use? I'm also trying to have a consistent navigation bar at the top of each layout (in the header of each layout), but I'd like to design it once and reuse it rather than copying and pasting it to the top of each layout. Is there a way to do this, or perhaps something similar? Thinking of it in terms of designing a website, this would be simple enough to do with HTML and CSS using percentages for widths in most cases. My main goal here is to come up with a set of "rules" for designing layout that would be easy to maintain and keep a consistent look as we move forward with the project. Any tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance
  15. Layout shifted slightly right

    I have a database with a number of layouts. Each has the same logo at top left, a title in caps, and then a 1-pt line box surrounding the fields. For consistency's sake I want all these things in the exact same location on each page. In Layout Mode I have used the Inspector to check the location of all these items (for example, the logo is at 0,0) and they are identical across all layouts.  However, when I'm in regular mode and I click through the layouts, on ONE layout everything is shifted about 2 pts to the right, and there is a tiny gap all down the left side -- see screen caps (hope they're big enough). This gap is NOT visible when I look at it in Layout mode. I have checked the Body and Header locations and they're set the same as all the other layouts.  This is driving me nuts not being able to figure it out. Help?
  16. We would like to display data from multiple tables in the form of charts on a single layout. Filemaker does not allow this, so I am seeking a work-a-round that is not going to significantly add to the overhead. I have a solution that works. It involves container fields and a script that runs at start up. Unfortunately, this script dramatically slows the start of the database, especially if the database is accessed via VPN while away from work. We are using FMP12 clients on Macs running OSX 10.8 or 10.9, and our database is hosted on a server running FMP12 Server. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
  17. Animated Layout Transitions (FM13)

    The animations introduced in FM13 are great, but they still don’t let us animate the transition from one layout to another. This is something we’re looking for as it’s often used in iOS apps to move from list to detail and back again. However, using full-layout slide panels, we can animate layout transitions as long as we’re careful to get the timings right. Our unlocked example file demonstrates how to do this in your own solutions and introduces using OnTimer triggers to queue animations that might otherwise be invisible within a single script.   18. I'm a fairly new, but quick-learning user of FM 11. After performing a search, I would like the user to be able to select a record from the found set to edit by simply clicking on a field of the record, which would then select that record and switch to the layout used to do the editing. For example, searching for all people with outstanding balances, clicking on the name of a person with an outstanding balance, and being taken to the layout that allows their account to be edited. I can get the search done, but the clicking to select a record and change layouts is causing me issues. Any suggestions?

Ok, before I burn thru lots of time (as I've already spent a couple hours...), I was hoping someone may KNOW if you can do peer-to-peer between iPads (3 is the goal) on a closed wifi network (no internet connection)...? AND, if so, could I set it up so that at each iPad a user can log in to show only certain layouts...? Basically, I'm aiming for a mobilized menu/prep ordering system: Cashier + Order Prep Queue + Delivery Queue TIA for any insights
  20. In FM 12 Pro Adv... I have an already existing layout with fields populating it from a table. I went to Manage Database and created 12 more all new fields in the same table. Now I want to add those 12 new fields to the same already existing layout. It seems that all I can do is to individually drag the new fields on to the layout using the Field Tool. Isn't there a way to select multiple fields (from a dialog?) and add them en masse'? I know how to do this with an all new layout. Thank you all...

Using the Starter Solution in FMPRO 12 called "Contacts" I have conditionally formatted the Work Address & Home Address Tabs (in the "Contact Details" layout) to color the tab label's text green IF there is anything in the "Work Address 1" field or the "Home Address 1" field. Since you can only see EITHER the Work Address OR the Home Address at one time (in that layout) this color change let's me know if the currently unselected tab has any data or not. If both are empty, they remain white; if one or the other has info, that tab ("Work Address" or "Home Address") is green; if both have info, they are both green. Question: Can I use this conditional formatting (the green "state") to do the following. When I go from the "Contacts" layout and try to use the "Labels" button, the default setup for that layout appears to be configured only for the Work Address fields. As a result, if a contact only has Home Address info, this gives me EMPTY LABELS with only the contact name. What I would like to have the "Labels" layout do (of course) is print ANYTHING THAT HAS ADDRESS INFO, whether it's work or home…or both! (i.e. Green) Does anyone know if this is doable and how to do it? TYVMIA,
