Forgive me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that when using the LIst(field) function to combine multiple records into one field, that the sort order was meant to be defined by the sort order set in the relationship. I've had this working before, but for some reason it doesn't seem to want to do it anymore, and is always reverting back to the order of when the records were generated. I've attached an example here, where i eneterd the data in this order: ONE, THREE, FIVE, TWO, FOUR (with each record having a number field corrsponding to the word to use to sort on: 1,3,5,2,4). As youcan see the portal sorts correctly, but the COMBINE (List) field which uses the List function does not, even though the sort order of the relationship is set to the number field. Whats even ore odd is that I managed to get this to work in two other solutions, though both of them initially didn't work, but onceI had put the portal on the page, the COMBINE (List) field then reverted to sorting acorrding to the relationship sort order ??   2. Heads up: Our users have found that value lists in popup menus that formerly ignored pre-pended characters for sorting, now respect them. For instance, in FileMaker 12, values that were pre-pended with an asterisk were displayed in Alpha-numeric order by default — and the pre-pended asterisk was ignored: Now, in FileMaker 13, these characters are included in the default sort order, so all of the pre-pended values are now together at the top of the list: If anyone has suggestions on how I can restore the previous behavior (short of reverting back to FileMaker 12!), I'm all "ears". I have a list which is generated from two separate tables, and consists of letters and numbers - for example Table A gives the list: 2, 3, 4, 4A Table B gives the list: A, B, 1 I would like to concatenate the lists and then sort them into order thus: Concatenated and sorted list; A, B, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A Filemaker's sort mechanism allows you to sort records based on a value list. I can get them into this order with a sort using a value list like this (I've missed a few values out!) A, AA, B, BA, C, CA, D ......Y, YA, Z,1,1A, 2, 2A, 3, 3A ........24, 24A, 25 Has anyone got a custom sort function which will sort a list in the same way, or point me at the algorithm used to sort based on a value list?   4. I've been working on optimizing a complex part of a solution that relied on the List() function to send multiple parameters to a custom function. Through my research I came across this article: http://www.teamdf.com/weetbicks/the-search-for-fast-aggregates--trial--error/99/ This article discusses the fact that when you use List(), Sum() or other aggregate functions, FileMaker sends the entire record set to the client, not just the data from the requested field(s). Does anyone know if this is also the case with ExecuteSQL()? I would assume that an SQL query would only return the requested data, but I'd like to know if this is definitely happening or not.

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible with FileMaker Pro Adnvanced (12 my version) to create a layout containing a list and a card (details view displaying a whole record) in the same layout, i.e.: - on the left side, see a list of all records (and a scrollbar maybe) - if I click on a line, in the right column, a details view is shown to edit the details. It does not work with the referenced records tool - they are not records from other tables, but the same table. (and sorry for maybe some odd words - I have the German version and I am not sure about the correct English ones) Does that work? Many thanks for your help, Claus
  6. Hey guys. First time post here. I just purchased Filemaker Pro 14 for our company and am in the process of setting up a database for our call center to use in tracking customer contact, having notes on each contact and so on. I have the system basically setup and functional. But I am trying to expand the functionality of the database a bit. Below is what I am needing to do. I have a Database with Contact information in it. It has a related table for a number of diferent types of content. one being Notes for each contact. I currently am using the find feature for the girls in the call center to find the people they need to contact. What I would like however is to have a list inside a portal or equivalent of all the items that they return from their find. For example: 2000 Contacts They search for company name: Auto Sales That returns a list of records 100 of 2000 Records. the first Record is for: Spartanburg Auto Sales What I want to have along with all the standard contact information for that record is a portal that will display under the notes column showing all the other records with specific fields (Name, Company, Phone, Date Last contacted, etc.) that they can scroll through. Almost like a queue of what their upcoming calls will be in a way. Perhaps even highlighting the record they are currently on. But thats not a deal breaker. Any help for this noob would be great.   7. Hi. I need help wrapping my brain around this problem. Assuming the following result from a SQL query: product1,A,B product1,C,D product2,U,V product2,W,X product2,Y,Z product3,K,L How would one go about transforming it into this using a CF? product1,A,B,C,D product2,U,V,W,X,Y,Z product3,K,L Here each product has only one row and all remaining field data for the other rows with the same product in the first result is concatenatied into this one row. Or even into this { "label": "product1", "data": [ {"start": "A","end":"B"}, {"start": "C","end":"D"} ] }, ...etc This is actually the final JSON format I need.
  8. I feel like I should know how to do this, but when I think about it, the only ways I know how to do it will not allow another part of what I want. What I'm after is to make something like a rolodex. The way I know how to do it, you end up with a list of found records, with a script for the alphabetical "filter," when you want that. The thing is that the only way I know to do this, you end up with a small body part, like in the Contacts starter solution. But I also want to have my virtual list sidebar alongside, because that's how I'm handling my navigation between layouts. Obviously, the way I know how to make the rolodex is in conflict with the size of body needed to fit the portal for the virtual list sidebar. Is there a way to have a layout that presents records in a list form, but with other elements on the layout that are larger in size than a row of the list (without causing a huge gap between each row of the list)? The only other way I can figure to do it is to not use the Person table for the context of the layout, and then add a portal. But that seems a little odd when the only things on the layout would be the alphabetical scripted buttons, the list, and the virtual list sidebar menu. Thanks. -- Rick Horowitz Fielmaker n00b

Hi All, I have this fairly simple field, it's a calculation that returns a list, and it works well: If ( IsEmpty ( IP Addresses::IPv4 Address ); "No Static IP"; List ( IP Addresses::IPv4 Address ) ) However, in the resulting list that displays, I'd like to substitute the carriage returns with commas, and I've come up with this bit of code to make the substitution: Substitute ( IP Address Display; "¶" ; ", " ) Is this correct? If so, where do I place the substitute statement? Will it go into the same calculation I use to define the field, or do I have to put this into a brand new field of its own? Thanks in advance, C
  10. I have stumbled upon a strange bug in one of my Databases concerning a value list. We have a table containing part numbers, which is related to a table containing "revisions" for the part numbers, which is related to a table of inspections for the "revisions". On a layout of the Inspections table, I have a value list. This value list selects the UUID of the revision, but displays the Part Number for the user. This has worked perfectly for several months. However, this morning one of my users discovered that he was unable to located "0000194" from this list. At first I thought maybe the UUID's somewhere along the line had become disconnected from their respective foreign keys on related tables. This was not the case. I then tried deleting and remaking the value list. This did not solve my problem. Then I figured if I deleted and rebuilt everything related to 0000194 that would fix it. This was not the case either. As a last ditch effort I restarted our FileMaker server, to no such luck. So then I began playing around with various aspects of 0000194. First I changed the company name, but it still didn't show up on the value list. Then I changed the part number to "TESTPART", and it showed up perfectly. So I tried "0194" and that showed up. Same for "00194" and "000194", but as soon as I add a fourth zero making it 0000194, it disappears from my value list. I'm 95% sure that this part number used to show up on the value list just fine, as we've already done inspections using this part number. So I'm thinking this bug has something to do with the leading zeros. I'm unsure of how to debug this or if there's any workarounds for this issue. Let me know if I need to supply any more information. Thank you in advance for any help you all can offer! [SOLUTION] At some point one of our scripts was run by a user without full permissions. The script added part number "0000194" to another customer, which I never noticed. Since Value Lists are indexed, it was not showing "0000194" because it was not a unique value. Deleting the second occurrence of "0000194" cleared my problem up.

I am attempting to use the following script in a Database: Set Variable [$supplierCount; Value: ValueCount ( List ( Suppliers::UUID ) )] Set Variable [$month; Value: MonthName ( Get ( CurrentDate ) )] Set Variable [$suppliers; Value: List ( Suppliers::UUID )] Loop Set Variable [$i; Value: $i+1] Exit Loop If [$i > $supplierCount] New Record/Request Set Field [Month::Month; $month] Set Field [Month::fk_Supplier; GetValue ($suppliers ; $i )] End Loop When I run it, however, it creates zero New Records within my "Month" database. I'm not sure what the issue is. My only hunch is that the List function isn't properly creating a List of the "Suppliers::UUID" field, and is causing the ValueCount taken of it to return 0. Please let me know of any additional information I can provide, and thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer!

I have a portal from which I am able to go to a portal row and copy conetent from two fields in the portal to fileds outside the portal using a go to portal row script without problems but in the same row, I have two additional fields that are lookups into another table that I also need to copy into outside fields as well. What happens when I invoke the script is the first two fields in the selected portal row works without issue but the two lookups field copies always comes from the first row of the portal and not the second. The portal itself works exactly as it should but for the life of me, I can't get the lookup files to work as they should. Any help on this would be great. TIA Bob Moran
  14. Hello All, I have a parent table with a related table that holds records with 2 fields - a field holding either "S" (Strengths) or "W" (Weaknesses) and a comment field. For report printing purposes, I'd like to combine the comment field of all related portal records in a combine_field in the parent table - but only if the record is a Strength. Could you please advise if I need to script the combining similar to this http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2403/kw/combining records but with an additional check on the S/W field... or is there a more efficient solution whereby I can make my combine_field a calculated result using the List function and some kind of conditional function like If or FilterValues?   15. Pretty much everything in FileMaker comes with some form of comment box to let you add more information - such as fields, menus, custom functions, calculations, scripts, and the graph.   16. Haven’t found post of this problem so here I go. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Everything ran nominally under Server13, external authentication After upgrading to Server14 (following instruction meticulously) none of the databases would show up until I unchecked “List only the databases each user is authorized to access”. When unchecked all the databases show to all users but they can only enter the one’s they have access to. This tells me that the External Authentication is still working properly but the File Display Filter is no longer working. Note: this happens with all client connection types, Windows, Mac, Web-Direct, and GO. Any help would be appreciated.
  17. Hi all I have a personnel portal (looks up values from the 'personnel table'). When I click a row then the associated personnel_ID is put in to a personnel_IDF field in a new record of a different table (Case_personnel). This second table is also displayed in a portal. No changes have been made to the 'personnel' table. How can I get the personnel portal to exclude records where the personnel_ID matches the personnel_IDF field in the Cases_personnel table?
  18. Looking for a hero. I have searched for an answer to this online and if one already exists, please point me to it. Otherwise, I'm hoping there's a FMrock star out there capable of identifying what I'm doing wrong. Am trying to create three levels for conditional value lists to identify the location of assets. Consider this a library inventory sytsem that tracks: multiple locations where items are held, multiple aisles within each location, and multiple shelves on each aisle. The goal is to enable users to enter an asset record and select from a value list of LOCATIONS. That's a straightforward list from the LOCATIONS table. Works fine. Next the user should be able to select from a value list of AISLES contained within that location, as defined in the related AISLES table. That, too, works through a value list relationship that filters by id_location to only display related aisles in the value list. Works fine. So far so good. Lastly, the user should be able to select from a value list of SHELVES contained within that aisle, as defined in the related SHELVES table. This is where my conditional value list logic breaks down. The value list displays numerous shelves, but not the records related to the AISLE record selected in the AISLES value list above. As perplexing is that when I add a portal to the layout for data entry of the locations, aisles and shelves themselves, the relationships hold up and the layouts function correctly. It's only when I try to take that data and present it as individual value lists during data entry of assets in that layout that the third value list doesn't work, though the first two value lists do work.   19. I have a field that is a List of values I want to match records to. The field in the target table is also a List values. So my search parameters might be this list "A|B|F" (pretend | is a new line making a List) and my target search field might be "A|G|N". Since they both share the A, the record should match. I tried looping through each item in the search parameters list and doing a Perform Find on each, but each find overwrites the last. Apparently multiple search criteria do not add to the result set unless part of the same Perform Find. I tried some creative Find Requests like OneField = Length( FilterValues($SearchValues, ChildStatuses) ) > 0 - where OneField is the value 1, but that finds all records. How do I perform this find from a script? Thanks, Brad

Let me first preface this by saying I am by no means an expert on Filemaker, more an enthusiast looking to save my small regional field hockey facility from purchasing an expensive shrink wrapped package. So... After searching high and low for a way in which to generate a sports leagues fixture, by using a combination of Custom Functions, Calculations and Scripting. I've also been working on my own to generate something that will get me closer to my goal. This forum post is VERY close, but I've come up with a few things that make for a little more flexibility. Also, the solution posted by Eos has an issue with calculating the fixtures for a league that has an odd number of teams. That being said some points within this solution have been invaluable in getting my solution to where it currently is, so a very big thanks to Eos for his assistance previously. Onto my solution... Posted Here There are two issues at this stage, no doubt more will pop up... 1) The Match List, which utilises a CF called UnorderedPairs found on Brian Dunning's site, is sequential meaning all the 1 | x values are generated first, and then the 2 | x values and so on... Instead the combinations need to come out in a series that allows each team to play only once, and balances the distribution of the fixtures over the time slots available during the season. Home and Away designations DO NOT Matter, since all games are played at a single venue, with the time being the only designation for each round of fixtures. 2) The Loop that creates the fixtures does not carry the previous values forward with the counter, so each round ends up being the same, the script needs to 'remember' the used values and then step forward to the next available value from the match list at the completion of each round. As an alternative, I have a Python Script that will create the schedule perfectly, but I have no idea how to integrate Python into a Filemaker Solution, so I've moved away from that, but I do still have the Script available should I need it. So if anyone out there is able to help out in that respect, please let me know. Any and all help is greatly appreciated Many Thanks
  21. Hi! I am very new to Filemaker Pro 13. I am creating an employee database that records all trainings they have taken. My layout is all set up EXCEPT I can not figure out how to create a summery/list of trainings that are only applicable to a specific employee. I have about 100 different trainings and if a particular employee has taken the training I have an "x" on my very large excel spreadsheet. How do I create a formula that will generate a list of all trainings that have an "x" in my excel spreadsheet that correspond with each employee? I do not want to have to list every training ever on each record and have to scroll through and find the ones that have a check next to them, I would get nowhere! Thank you so much!

  23. Hello All, I have a file with shipment information that I need to import into separate tables, a shipment name/id table and a shipment line items table. The problem is it is formatted in a way that the shipment name/id is located in column 2, row 1. The shipment line item information starts at row 9 and but the number of subsequent lines vary with each shipment. I’m not sure how to go about writing a script to create a new shipment in the shipment table using the value from column 2/row 1, then create child records in the shipment line items table with the values starting at row 9. I have written a couple executeSQL calculations that gather the shipment name and line item information I need but I can’t figure out how to use the data from the executeSQL calc to create the shipment line items records. Is there a better way to do this? Any help and/or suggestion would be very much appreciated!
  24. Fellow developers, a question I must ask (I'm sorry if this seem so unusual; my filemaker development is not the most common) I have a database of paragraphs. The idea being, each paragraph is a record, in a Table named Reference. The whole idea of this database, which has more tables but could work with just one, is to make a manual, a handbook for the company I work for. Let me give a example: we have a specific instruction on how to deal with taxes at importation. We create a record named: taxes at importation, and we related this record to another record in our self-related table (taxes, or importation). So: RecordID_pk FatherID_fk Title R1 1 0 Importation R2 2 1 Taxes at importation the idea is to have a list of related records, with order numbers self-created, all of which I ALREADY HAVE. So our database already does the following: - organize the record relating it to parents - performs searches easily (thanks for fmsearch for that) - easily allows to change parent record - order the records in a unified string -- 01; 01.01; 01.02; 02, etc. My problem is: we have people (trainees) that need to read the whole manual over and over again (because they want to memorize, and they seem to think this is a good way - who can argue?). We have a "create pdf with all records" button, but they insists on reading live material. And there is some point to that. If the person is reading a theme, and it changes after the PDF is created, it obviously wont go to the pdf (unless another pdf is made). I know that whatever was read before will not be revised (like, any changes in chapter one will be missed if the person is already in chapter two) but he will re-read it eventually; no big deal. As the reading may be exausting, and the trainees have, obviously, other tasks to do, we have a 1000 pages manual, which is something like 60 hours long to read, which the trainees will read 2 hours a day (more or less), 4 days a week. This means that if the trainee generates the PDF today, and we have a change in some topic, he will have to read the whole manual once (60hours/8hours per week aprox = 7,5 weeks) and them re-read the theme, which can cause some stress in this almost two months delay. So, we need to do live reading. My problem is: how to make the best reading experience in filemaker for lots of records with different sizes of text? Some paragraphs are two sentences long. Some, two pages long. Some are just titles. When I print to pdf is very simple (with the slide up feature), but when I make a layout, all I can offer, so far, is a list view with fixed sizes or a form view, with go to next record. What I want? First, any suggestion if there is some obvious way to do what I need that I'm missing Second, a way to display all (or some at least) of my records in a list-way in a webviewer. Kind like a wikipedia page has sub-topics (ok, it doesn't need all the fancy jump-to-section, although it would be awesome). Right now, I'm not trying to have the full-implementation, but just to understand which way I may/might follow. Thanks for the help in reading all this long text. Ps: If necessary, I'd be willing to do some html trick or something like (it already has some html tricks in the webviewer)
