  2. Hello everyone, I have been working on this for many weeks and unfortunately the newest road block has me stumped. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. I have 4 text fields in my Event/Guest table: GuestNames, FoodRequest, SitWith and SpecialAccess. For the first time, I am importing this information from an excel spreadsheet downloaded from a vendor. Unfortunately, all 4 questions and their answers are combined into one field, so the imported cell looks like this: If you have purchased tickets for others, please list their names for check in and name tag purposes.: John Doe, Mary Smith | Are there any food allergies?: No | Who would you like to sit with at lunch?: Mary Doe | Do you have any special accessibility needs?: No I have defined some calculation fields to parse the start and end of the questions/answers and it works--as long as the user answers every question. If the guest does NOT answer a question, nothing is sent in that place. This means that the placement of the question/answers is not predictable. Nor is the text that starts at the next question in the line. In an attempt to solve this complication, I have created another calculation field that takes the entire blurb and substitutes a carriage return for each "|", making it a value list. I can search for the text string that is applicable, but how do I retrieve the value of the whole line? If I could do that, I could trim the question off and have my text answer for each of the fields I need. There may be a better way to do it, and I'm open to suggestions. Thank you again!
  3. Hey, I have a Tab-Separated Text File which I want to import to a database that I just created in FileMaker Pro 15. The text file essentially is a log of events, for instance, one line describes an order, another line describes a payment that has been made. The problem is that I somehow need to import all these lines into different tables. I want all lines in the log file that describe a payment in a table called Payments, and all lines that describe an order in a table called Orders for example. I'm just starting out with FileMaker so forgive me if there is an obvious solution that I'm not aware of. I have a background in software development, so the only solution that I can think of is writing a small program myself that does all the parsing for me and creates separate text files that contain all the orders and payments and other events that have been logged in the file. Then I could simply import each file into the table I need all the data in. So to sum everything up, my main question is if there is a way to somehow parse the text file before importing it. I know that you can create custom scripts in FileMaker but I'm not sure if what I need to do can be done just with that. Thanks in advance, Mike
  4. I am creating a database solution that needs to read the text from a pdf in a container field and put it into another calculation or field for parsing. I have read many articles and can't seem to find a solution to something that a simple Mac Automator Action can do. I have done this in Filemaker for Mac (not Go) via AppleScripts. I need to do this native to Filemaker without plugins or external scripts as this will end up being on Filemaker Go residing on the tablet/phone. Is this possible?
  5. Hello, I am a FM newbie and have been scouring the web for an answer to this problem: I want to eliminate the text within parentheses in a string, but I want to eliminate all instances: ORIGINAL STRING: This is a test of the (emergency) broadcast system. (It is only a test). Remain calm. DESIRED STRING: This is a test of the broadcast system. Remain calm. Can anyone help? Also, is it possible to tie the function or script to a field so that when the ORIGINAL string is put into the field, the field does the conversion automatically? thanks very much in advance, SB
  6. Hi all Hopefully this is in the right place, apologies if not. I'm using the technique found in the FM 13 advanced training series to generate virtual lists. I'm using virtual lists to quickly transfer data to a scratch table used for reporting. I have an ExecuteSQL formula to gather some of the data in question: ExecuteSQL ( " SELECT GroupID, SUM(RoundedValue) FROM DataTable_Home WHERE CustID_FK = ? and Code < ? and PeriodNumber = 2 and (GroupID = 68 or GroupID = 3) GROUP BY GroupID "; "|" ; "|" ; Cust_Home::CustID_PK; "500" ) This generates in most cases a dataset of: 68|-3600|3|-7200| <<< as an example for this customer with 68 and 3 being the required group 'names' or headers. This data is passed via scripting into a field on the scratch table called ListData which has several fieldsdedicated to particular values, two of which are dedicated to Group68 values and Group3 values. The formula in each is: Get Value(ScratchTable::ListData;2)<<<For Group 68, -3600 Get Value(ScratchTable::ListData;4)<<<For Group 3. -7200 However, there may be cases where a customer does not have any values associated to either 68 or 3 which obviously reduces the return on the dataset and makes the parse section inaccurate. On my scratch table, I have several fields If a particular customer has NO value for group 68, the returned data set instead looks like: 3|-7200 and this will break all downstream GetValue(Field;x) calculations. So, what I really need to have is a reliable way of ALWAYS returning 4 pipe separated results in the situation that a customer has data missing from one or other of the groups, and that's where I'm stuck. If I could get to: 68|0|3|-7200 or 68|-3600|3|0 as an example, this would enable me to parse the 0 values to where they should be. Any help on this one greatly appreciated. Thanks
