  1. Hello, We have Filemaker server, and the techs in the field are sometimes in areas where the wifi/cellular service is sketchy at best. I was wondering what the best solution would be. I guess put the database on the devices (iPads) themselves and then create a script to import the offline data? I heard there are plugins to sync the data with the server. Just thought I'd throw it out there and see what experience other people have had. Caroline
  2. Has anyone seen this with FM15. The app itself works (I can work on local files) but I can’t connect to any remote servers. Has been uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Other FM versions work on the same machine. OS: 10.11.6 Thanks, Agi
  3. Mac only printer wants to connect a new Filemaker database to Quickbooks Pro. Intuit has not supplied the SDK for Quickbooks to developers, so FMBooksConnector works only with Win Quickbooks. A short conversation with a Productive Computing tech support guy indicated that Quickbooks comes with a DataMGR that allows hosting the IFF file (Quickbooks database) and accessing it from multiple users. He indicated that he thought that a Virtual Box (or Parallels or VMWare) install on the Mac with WinXP as a client and Quickbooks DataMGR and Filemaker with FMBooksConnector would work for tying FMP with QB and even remotely accessing the Quickbooks data. Anyone have any thoughts or experience? (I realize a Windows PC would be the logical solution) It is one user accessing the QB data and double entry of the Client, Invoicing and such would be nice to eliminate. Thank you for your attention. David Anders The Computer Guy Seattle
  4. This took some good google-fu for me to figure out, so I figured I'd post just in case anyone else is having the same problem. I had the following snippet that worked perfectly for the local database: This failed when I migrated the database to a remote server. Instead, I use this. The field in question ("Client matter number") is the third field in the layout. This is why I specify two "" in the data. I don't know why the former doesn't work for remote databases, but such is life! - Mike.
  5. Hello, I'm new to FMS and I'm trying to figure out why opening a database is taking so long. When I open the DB over our gigabit LAN things work smoothly and the layout opens in 1-2 seconds, but if I switch to our Wireless LAN opening the same layout can take up to 90 seconds and if I try to connect via VPN from home then we're into the minutes time frame. All the calculations occur server side in FMS correct? So if it's sending the same amount of results data why does a drop in connection speed cause such a drastic change in load times, unless of course wer're sending a HUGE amount of data to the client. Is there a way to track how much data is getting sent to the client? The size of the database is really quite tiny; something like 200k records / 3k fields. Server Specs: 10.7 Mac 2x 2.93 Ghz Hexcores 16GB of 1333 Mhz DDR3 ram. The only application it runs is FMS though it does alos serve a file store. The CPU according to Activity Monitor never gets above 1-2% usage.
  6. I am considering upgrading to FM12 on my main Mac. I have two other Imacs I use to access my primary db. One is running FM10 and the other FM11. If I upgrade will the other two imacs still be able to access and modify the file on my Imac with FM12 on it?
  7. Hi all Fairly trivial (but annoying) problem here! I've just transferred all Invoice PDFs to their respective container fields - which is externally stored (non secure) on the FMS Server. However the first PDF in the table had an '_1' at the end of the filename on the server. When I cleared the field and re-added the PDF it then has '_2' at the end, and so on. The underscore disappeared when I transferred the container from 'Invoices/' to 'Invoices2/' but the problem remains when I transfer back to 'Invoices/'. It doesn't happen to any other PDFs/records, just this first one in the table. Any ideas how I can 'reset' this? MT
  8. Hello, I am running Filemaker pro advanced 12 on windows 7 I have been searching allover the internet for an answer to this question but i can seem to find exactly what i am looking for. I am now using forums as my only hope. I am really new at all this and I am presently working on a project for a client. Basically, I am trying to create a video database for a production company that will allow every computer in the office to acces, add, remove and download different videos within a database that i have created in our server. I have developed the database template but I am having problems with reading videos from the other computers. After importing the video files in the file container (on the server) i can read without any problem the videos on the server. BUT, on the other computers and the Filemaker go apps, after opening a remote connexion, in the container field, it is written '' This file cannot be found''. I am pretty sure this has something to do with a misuse of the new features of the remote file containers but what options exactly do i need to enable in order to acces and read the videos from other computers, ipads or ipods. Is this problem because of the fact that i am not using filemaker server which im pretty sure allows streaming, unlike FM pro advanced 12. Can we acces, read or stream video files hosted on a server from another computer or ipad or iphone? Using FM pro advanced 12 If possible, can somebody guide me to succes? Thank you in advance!

  10. Hi, is there any best practice on how to work with remote Filemaker databases when they are offline? Carrier signal too weak, etc. I suppose the best bet would be to use the built-in functionality in Manage > External Data Sources and use the Filemaker format. But how can I check if the server is online? How to check if the data has safely landed? Using an iPad, I need to collect some data (< 1k / transmission) and have it automatically sent to the Server (FM Pro running on a Mac mini). Meanwhile informing the iPad user if the data has been safely transferred and if not retrying for as long as the data has been transferred to the server -- and all of this completely transparent to the user (without any cryptic error messages; just for example a small indicator that the data hasn't been sent or has been sent). How would you go about this? (BTW, I intend to use a data separation model, at least two files: One for the display on Macs and iPads and one for the tables. The user interface file could be used to temporary store the collected data locally while the connection is down.) Thanks a lot for any hints! Gary
  11. Hello, I have had to open another server location that I CANNOT set up with a static IP address. This location is where I'm going to install FMS 9.0 (hopefully). I'm interested in seeing if it's possible to bypass the static IP issue for FMS by setting up a VPN network so that the server and clients think they're on the same private side of a LAN. Having never studied, setup, diagnosed or otherwise ever touched VPN, I'm very much in the dark on the feasibility and ease to do this. I know the filemaker Go clients might be an issue with this setup, given the VPN limitations I'm sure apple built into IOS. Here's other relevant details below: Server: intel Duo MacMini Server OS: OS10.5 or OS10.6 (as needed for configuration with VPN) Filemaker Server: 9.0 Comcast Xfinity gateway router 25 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up speed 13 files hosted, largest is 35MB 4 remote "low workload" users (filemaker go & FMP 9.0) 1 or 2 remote "power" users (Macbook pro's: 10.8 / FMP 9.0 THanks for the consideration! Scott
  12. I am having some troubles with containers and PDF files. I want to be able to display the files to end users within the solution (i.e. they aren't downloading them), so wanted to use a container w/ interactive/preview capabilities so they could just scroll through it then and there. However, I seem to run into a problem whenever I host the file on our server and access from a remote client. Here's my testing: Create new file, add container field (internal storage); add field to basic layout, enabling 'Interactive content...' for the field; add PDFs to the file. A ) Storing and viewing this file on my local machine: works fine. I can right click and get 'Insert PDF' from the popup; files that I add to records preview fine. B ) Host the file on a server and open it with a remote client running on the same server hardware as is hosting the file: works fine. Same as A, above. C ) Host the file on a server (same server as B ) and open it with my local machine's client: FAILS. The PDFs don't preview; I am unable to get the right click menu to display anything other than 'Reload'. Can someone help me understand what I need to do here? I thought it might be an 'installed PDF viewer' issue, but the fact that it runs fine when the file is opened from my own local machine seems to go against that. Server is Mac OS X 10.6.8, FMSA v12.03. My system is Mac OS X 10.8 running FMPA 12.05; remote client is FMP 12.03 (?). Thanks, C

  14. I have been working with our systems admins to set up SuperContainer so that it can store its files on a remote file server, since a couple of research projects are threatening to overwhelm our FileMaker server with the volume of images they need to store. Since we're running SC (2.852) on FM Server 11 (running under Windows Server 2008), we've edited the web.xml file, and can see that SC is trying to write to the remote location. We have looked around for answers, but most of the advice seems to apply to Mac servers, not Windows. Here are the questions our sys admins have: (1) Does the remote volume need to be mounted? If so, how do we do this under Windows server, since mounted volumes are generally user-specific, while the server runs basically with no user logged in? (2) We see that on the Mac the remote volume should have a group:fmsadmin and owner:fmserver with read/write permissions. Does this apply in Windows? If so, are these groups local or domain-level? Our Active Directory domain encompasses an entire university, and so we're not sure we can claim either of these groups in the domain. What are the appropriate permissions settings on Windows? Any help would be appreciated (aside from the advice to switch to Mac server; though I would personally prefer that route, I'm not in a position to make that call)... Thanks.
  15. I am looking for some advice for having users remotely connect to our database for data entry only. Originally, we used IWP, but it was frustrating because we have a number of fields that use value lists with related values (the second field would be dependent on what has been selected from the previous field) and with the IWP we had to commit the record by pressing save in order for it to "refresh" and populate the next field's value list. This made data entry take too long. Currently, we have FM 11 Server on one server, and we have all of the user licenses living on a Mac Mini. Users access the Mac Mini through Share Screen/Remote Desktop and use the Open Remote feature to open the database. However, often there is a slight lag, as with any remote desktop. We use AquaConnect so that multiple users can log into the Mac Mini at once and not share the same screen. Are we complicating this too much? Is there a better way we could be allowing users to remotely connect to our database? Thanks for your help! Arbel
