Hey,

I have a Tab-Separated Text File which I want to import to a database that I just created in FileMaker Pro 15. The text file essentially is a log of events, for instance, one line describes an order, another line describes a payment that has been made. The problem is that I somehow need to import all these lines into different tables. I want all lines in the log file that describe a payment in a table called Payments, and all lines that describe an order in a table called Orders for example.

I'm just starting out with FileMaker so forgive me if there is an obvious solution that I'm not aware of. I have a background in software development, so the only solution that I can think of is writing a small program myself that does all the parsing for me and creates separate text files that contain all the orders and payments and other events that have been logged in the file. Then I could simply import each file into the table I need all the data in.

So to sum everything up, my main question is if there is a way to somehow parse the text file before importing it. I know that you can create custom scripts in FileMaker but I'm not sure if what I need to do can be done just with that.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You left out the part explaining how to tell these two apart.

Hey,

each line has a certain keyword. For example Payment or Order. Those keywords are in the same position in every line.

Thanks for your response,

Mike

Basically, you have two options:

1. Import the file twice, once into the Payments table and once into Orders. In each table, define a Type field and set it to validate by calculation:

 Self = "Payment"

and:

Self = "Order"

respectively, validate always. When importing, map the keyword to the Type field.

2. Import into a temp table first, then do a find for each type and import the found set into the corresponding target table.

Both options can be scripted so that the user only needs to select the file.

Hey,

thanks for the quick response. The first way you described sounds like a good solution, I will give it a try tomorrow, thank you so much.

      Use Case:  I've got a graphic (in this instance, a complete human body).
      I want to mouse-over and click on say, the hand, and have that trigger a script, with a parameter.
      I'd hope to simply have a single script, read the parameter (which would in fact grab the value of the tooltip), and have that passed into the script.
      It seems to me that the various flavors of "get(objectname), etc don't seem to have a way to grab the actual text that's in the "tooltip" or "object name".
      Am I missing something in there?
      I'd love to be able to create 50 graphics, name each one by tooltip (or object name), and not have to create/modify a script for each and every single graphic.
      thanks for any help!

      EDIT:  as a temp work-around, I've manually dropped the objectname into the script parameter, then have the script punch that into appropriate fields.. It's annoying to set up, and takes 5x's as long, but that's currently the only method I've got for this.
      Any further options?

      Does anybody know how we can workaround this behaviour of FileMaker Server/Client 15 on Mac/Windows:
      If we are inserting an image into a container field which stores the files externally and the filename is more than 50 characters, FileMaker strips the filename. I know that we cannot change this, but the problem is that another field which stores the filename for InDesign does not get attention to this.
      Is there a way to read the stripped containerfield-filename of FileMaker so that we do not have problems with longer named images?
      Thanks for any help…its driving me crazy :-(

      Hello,

      We are in the process of updating our FileMakerGo on the iPads from 13 to 16 but we are running into an issue with the sync. We are currently running MirrorSync 2.3 but will eventually upgrade to 3. Meanwhile, we need to get FMGO 15 or 16 work with our current MirrorSync.
      The sync error doens't always show, sometimes it syncs and sometimes it doesn't.
      Any ideas?
      Thanks

      I have a form in which users make measurements of multiple parts, then input the max and min measurements. I then have conditional formatting that compares these maxes and mins to the hard mins and maxes for that part. If the inputted max is larger than the hard max, or the inputted min is smaller than the hard min; the conditional formatting is supposed to highlight that measurement in red. This has worked in almost every case I have tested so far, except for one strange case. I have a hard min of 9.8, and my user is attempting to input 10 as the min. FileMaker is highlighting this in red, even though 10 is larger than 9.8. When we change it 9.9 it isn't red, but 10.1 makes it red as well. I have no idea why this is happening, so any assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
