EPS image disappeared leaving the icon

I've placed an eps image into a layout, the company logo that appears on every page. It hung around for a day or two and then disappeared, leaving its icon.

I thought it might be a linking issue (even though I recall having embedded it) so I moved it to the folder, the icon changed colour.

I have tried to re-import the image and now I'm told Filemaker "This file type cannot be used a picture" - I haven't edited the file at all in the interim.

What's happening here?

I realise, pragmatically, I shall just replace the image with a PNG and then copy into each and every layout, but, beyond my frustration I would like to understand what's going on.
