ScribeFileAsText fails on PDF

I get this error when trying to get the text out of a PDF:

ExceptionConverter: java.io.IOException: '>' not expected at file pointer 5438

Any ideas what the issue is? Unfortunately this PDF comes from a major back so I have no control over how it is generated, but do need to pull data out of it - if at all possible.

I've had a user report the same error today (although at a different pointer). I've run tests on a dozen of my own PDFs that work fine. However, several sample PDFs from this user fail. In all cases, his PDFs are scanned images that have been OCRed. Is that the case with your failures, too?
