searching within a filtered portal

I have a portal with an incremental search field.  works great.  I also, have a button bar with button reflecting file extensions. ex: pdf, pages, doc, jpeg, etc.  The button bar with the scripts work great by filtering each file extension. The issue is I want the filtered result but I also want to be able to search incrementally within that filtered selection. Any assistance would be appreciated.
