Some sorts no longer work after server upgrade

We just updated our server to 20.

We serve multiple database systems. In one in particular, some of the sorts that have worked fine for years no longer work.

This also happened with our last server upgrade. We were able to fix it by following advice in this Soliant article (https://www.soliantconsulting.com/blog/filemaker-server-performance/#server-side-sorting) & disabling server side sorting. We are assuming this is still a thing? Not sure why it started happening/why this setting needs to be disabled?

Update: We have a development server and a live server. The sort works normally as expected on the development server, but does not work on the live server.

Both are running 20.3.1.31

Both are on OS Server 2019 Standard

Both servers have the releasedebug txt file, though not sure if that is needed or not.

We have restarted the live server.

The sort field is from a related table. The database acts like the sort is working & says (sorted) instead of (unsorted) in the status bar area, but the list does not change/update. It is clearly not sorted.
