Why does it make a difference, to put "" instead of the default none - when speaking of the topics touched in this thread?

This issue has occurred to me while using a button bar as rendering mechanism, instead of a repeating calc field using Get ( CalculationRepetitionNumber ) - I enclose a template where I dwindle globally to narrow the options down by excepting the already taken ....

I would both have an explanation to why the active segment should be set to something like "" or char(0) to behave ... as well as some Ocham's razoring to the approach I'm working with here?
