fields in headers

I have a field sitting in a header area that I cannot modify. It is a numeric filed that i want to be able to enter an inventory number in but cannot get the field activated. This is being done in a DB that was already existing that I hve edited. Has anyone else had this problem?

Fields in a header can be modified in form view not list view. Switch to form view.

One more thing about fields in header and footer parts:

Fields in the header belong to the first record in the found set. Fields in the footer belong to the last record in the found set.
