Updating amounts based on viewing a portal

I have a customerorder.db which customers can view a range of products through a portal of a productlist.db.

I want to allow customers to also purchase products from this.

What is the best way to add an purchase function so it updates the available product qtys in productlist.db when a new record is created in the customerorder.db (taking into account previous customer orders.)
