FM Pop-up menus act differently on Win

A difference I noticed in the Filemaker 5 or 5.5 versions for Mac and Windows is in the pop-up menu's.

On macintosh, the pop-up menu opens with the mousecursor on the selected item. That's fine, because clicking without moving the mouse exits the pop-up menu not changing the selected item.

On windows, in the pop-up menu the cursor is set on the upper first option. That means, that clicking changes the selection if a selection was already made (and not being the first option).

When a user accidently clicks on a pop-up menu, an unwanted change is likely to happen, unless he is clearly instructed to LEAVE the pop-up menu before clicking again.

Does anyone happen to know why this is, that difference? and whether in Filemaker 6 this glitch is repaired?

Actually Harry, there are quite a few differences in the way both pop-up lists and pop-up menus are handled in Mac and Windows, and no, they aren't 'fixed' in v6.

The differences include the fact that tabbing to a pop-up menu in Win pops it, but not in Mac, and a pop-up list in Mac stays popped until you tab or click with the mouse, but not in Windows (where other events such as scripts pausing or resuming cause the field to 'lose focus'.

One might suppose that the different behaviour - and the different appearance also - may be at least partly due to difference in available resources at the operating system level - but whatever the reason, it makes using them for cross platform work rather tedious...
