Importing data using ODBC

Featured Replies

I have a couple of simple questions:

1. Can Filemaker Pro be used to both export and import data via ODBC across a TCP/IP network?

2. How do you import data using ODBC into a FileMaker Pro file? The FileMaker Pro file resides on one machine and the data being imported is in MS Access on a separate machine (the two machines exist within the same LAN).

I am new to FileMaker Pro's ODBC abilities so am trying to get a feel for what is capable within the realm of ODBC and FileMaker Pro 6. Thank you for any help.

FM does has ODBC importing capabilities. Generally setting up an ODBC link is reasonably straight forward by setting up a data source. An ODBC control panel is installed as part of the FM installation (Mac). I haven't done it, but I imagine you should be able to link to an Access database. I've only connected to an oracle database via ODBC.

In my opinion FM's ODBC capabilities are adequate, not fantastic.

Cheers, Peter.

Is there a way to import ann entire database into FM Pro? I've successfuly connected to an SQL 2000 db on a remote server, and just want to 'capture' the entire Table (database) into a new FM Pro file--all the Columns (fields), and all the Rows (records). Is there a simple way to do that? If I choose File --> Import ODBC source, it brings up the SQL query builder--what do I do then to import everything?

Any Ideas?
