Send Mail Step: Attaching Excel Files

I am using NT4. I encounter problems with the Send Mail step not working properly (i.e., not attaching file or sending mail) when I tell it to attach an Excel sheet or even a .htm containing an Excel sheet. I get the same results with v4.0, v4.1 and v5.0 of FM. The only workaround I've found is not a good one at all--perform with dialog and manually attach. What am I doing wrong?
