Is there any way to turn off some of the many events that show up in the application log?

I'm not sure I understand why you would want to limit the events shown. It is, after all, a log. If/when anything goes wrong, you want access to all the data possible in order to diagnose the problem. If the log is getting too large for your tastes, you can delete older sections if you want, but all that info is definitely there for a reason.
