McCormick Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 I am having a seemingly intractable problem with unwanted white space on my layout. I want to print a catalogue of contact information - a very straightforward listinf of names, numes, etc. This is sort by County, and some counties have more than one program to list while some coutnies have only the sentence "There are no programs in this county." The data itself is basic things like names and email, plus one field of"description", which varies considerably in length. Also, of course, some programs don't have text in each possible field (for example, no website). These are all printing on top of each other; no columns or portals or fanciness. I have set all the items to Slide Up and to Also Reduce. I have set the Subsummary (By County) to Allow Break but not to Discard Remainder. I have almost no extra space above and below my fields. I've tried this with multiple fields and with a single text calc field that combines them. Can anyone tell me why I'm getting big expanses of blank real estate on several pages? The bottom half of the page is sometimes empty. Reading similar posts, it seems that this might just be an unsolved headache of FMP and print drivers, but I would appreciate any advice on steps I can take to tighten this up. Also, do the printer drivers affect what I see in Preview? Is that image created with the driver?
Vaughan Posted November 26, 2003 Posted November 26, 2003 Extra or unwanted carriage returns in fields cause havoc with sliding/printing. A client of mine complained about a solution being bad until I demonstrated that their users were putting carriage returns randomly after people's first names, surnames and in address fields. Printer driver problems usually manifest themselves as the Print Preview being significantly different from the actual printed output. I believe only the Page Setup (Print Setup in Windows) options especially page size and the minimum print margins affect Preview.
McCormick Posted December 13, 2003 Author Posted December 13, 2003 Sorry for the long delay. Carriage returns can be a problem, but they are not the problem I've been having. This is one of those situations that I ended up solving by creating a new layout - seemingly identical, but I must have done something different this time. The only ongoing problem I have with this is cutting lines of text in half, horizontally. I know you can set fields to either break or not break across pages, but there's no way I know to order the actual letters to be kept whole. The output is, I know, really an image file, so it doesn't recognize text. Or is there anything I can do to change this? I just want the severed line of text to be pushed down to be completely on the next page. That is, I'd like page breaks to fall between lines of text, not on top of them.
