John Chamberlain Posted December 2, 2003 Posted December 2, 2003 Regarding my previous question, things did not work out well with my attempt to install Windows NT 4.0 on the computer I wanted to use as a server, so I foolishly sold my copy of Filmaker Server NT on Ebay. Now I have a friend who is upgrading her company's network, and she has volunteered the donation of a fairly recent server as a charitable donation. It will come with Windows NT 6.something installed. Meanwhile, The Wellness Community has decided that they want a a file server for all of their files (mostly Word & Excel and all the FMP files). Here's the question: Do I have to have a copy of FM Server NT (which is proving difficult to find on Ebay) to work with this server, or can I just install FM Server for Windows and get it to work?
Vaughan Posted December 3, 2003 Posted December 3, 2003 FM Server only works with Windows NT, 2000 or XP. It won't install on 3.1, 95, 98 or ME because FMS runs as a service. Consequently you may want to reconsider your question regarding the suitability of "FM Server NT" over "FM Server for Windows." However, you *DO NOT* want to run a network file service on the same machine that you are using to host FM Server. Performance will suffer badly, and if users somehow manage to open FMP files through the shared network volume, you're going to have serious database corruption. Get two boxes.
