I have two fields that completely overlap. Only one field at a time contains text. How do prevent the more forward field from blocking the view of the more backward (posterior) field?

You should be able to make the forward field transparent. In layout mode,select the field, and click the pattern fill menu (to the right of the colour fill menu), and select the transparent option.
