Does anyone know how to change a field's value based on anotherones?

For instance:

field:category is set to be a valuelist with 8 entries.

field:subcategory should change depending on what the chosen selection in category is.

if category is plumbing, then subcategory should then change to valulist lumbinglist

or is glassware is chosen in category, then subcategory should be valuelist:glasslist

see what I'm saying?

Seems like I see a basic question on conditional menus almost every day (not to mention someone who used repeating fields and is frustrated). Maybe an FAQ/ primer formum could be posted that answers FAQ's and then we could just refer them to it when they ask the same question that dozens of other beginners have already asked and been answered? Or maybe they would look at it even before asking.
