Newbies rix Posted March 3, 2004 Newbies Posted March 3, 2004 Hi all, I am not a very experienced Filemaker user and I'm currently facing the following problem: Our company has an Ethernet network with: 1 PC (Windows 2000) running Filemaker Server 5.5, 1 PC (Windows 98 SE) running Filemaker Server 5.5, 2 Macs (1 powerbook G4, 1 IMac) (MacOS 10.3) running Filemaker Pro 6.0 We have a database in which we insert references to mp3 files (via insert quicktime command). What we need to do is to be able to hear the mp3 files referenced in the database in all the computers in the network (except the one where Filemaker Server is installed). So far were only able to hear the mp3s in the computer where the link/reference is created, even though were using the open remote command to open the database files which are stored in a subfolder of the Filemaker Server application folder. When we try to hear the mp3 from any other computer we get an error message saying the mp3 cant be found. The mp3s are stored in a different hard disk in the same machine where Filemaker Server is running. Is there a solution? I would really appreciate if someone could help us with this. Thanks in advance, Ricardo
stanley Posted March 3, 2004 Posted March 3, 2004 Ricardo: The mp3 files really shouldn't be stored on the FileMaker Server machine (whichever one that is; you've indicated two servers in your post.) If the mp3 files are stored somewhere else, you should be able to access them across the network. However, my experience dealing with this is entirely on the Mac, and in that situation you can use AppleTalk networking. Because you've (apparently) got a PC client machine as well, you've got to go for a cross-platform setup. A client of mine once used a machine as a web server to store graphics & sounds, and used the Open URL script command to open the file (based on a URL stored in a text field) via the web browser. That's always a possibility, though you are then jumping out of FileMaker... -Stanley
