I'm not as familiar with the Windows platform, which I'm assuming that you're using since you speak of WAV files. However, rather than playing the WAV file outside the database, you might consider keeping the WAV sound inside of the database in a container field. According to the FileMaker manual (page 2-12 of version 5), FileMaker can support WAV formatted sounds if QuickTime is installed, which is free from Apple. Once QuickTime is installed on Windows, you can use the Insert->QuickTime command and select the WAV file.

Now to play the file, use a script that goes to a layout with the field on it, and then use the Go to Field command with the Select/Perform option on.

I've done this before on the Mac side, so I'm hoping that it works similarly on the Windows side of things.
