Just got my copy of FM7 Dev this past week--moving all the way up from FM3--which didn't have portals (I think they arrived in v. 4?). I'm beginning to figure out some of the "ins and outs" of portals (pun only partly intended;), but I have a lot of new stuff to figure out here. Since there are no FM7 books on the market yet, would a FM6 vol. be useful to learn the portal system? Or have there been substantive changes in how portals work in v. 7? If so, any recom. on what book might be most helpful? I know FM3 fairly well, and though 7 has a familiar look and feel, I'm discovering just how much more is hidden under the simple interface.

Thanks,

Decker

Hey Decker,

FM3 did have portals, you just couldn't sort them properly. The information about portals in FM5/6 is still valid in FM7, but FM7 has some major enhancements.

Portals in 3? My memory is failing. I must have given up on them when they were introduced--or perhaps never understood them. But that was a long time ago. The move to 7 is interesting; I've got a lot to learn now that I need to get back to doing some serious DB work. The new migration paper on the FM site looks helpful, but I've just started reading it. Thanks for your comments.
