H.P. Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Hi all, I am trying to create a portal with a flexible comment (text) field. For example, if you user type only one line, the portal would resize that row to display only one line of text. If the field is 5 lines, the portal displays 5 lines for the field in that row, while display differently for other rows. Does anyone know if it's possible to do that in filemaker? Thanks, Ha Pham.
andygaunt Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Unfortunately, FM does not enable you to dynamically alter the size of a portal row, let alone on a row by row basis. Now, if this was for printing purposes, you can use sliding/printing to change the printable information per row. Just set your portal to its maximum size and the fields inside you want to have multiple lines. Then set sliding printing to slide up based on all above and reduce size of enclosing part. HTH
H.P. Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 Thank you for replying. I was afraid the answer would be a no. It would be a nice feature to have though. Even the simple html table was able to do that "years" ago. Filemaker still has too many limitations
QuinTech Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 HP, i hate to be defensive, but if you want to do html then do html. If you want a database, FM is great. As for the functionality you wish for, well, i could come up with several issues that could arise if it worked like an html table, which is one of a set of one or more pre-defined cells, whereas cells in a portal are virtually unlimited... What i'm saying is, apples and oranges. Good luck with your database. Jerry
H.P. Posted May 11, 2004 Author Posted May 11, 2004 I agree that Filemaker is great I have no major problem developing applications with it. What I'm trying to say is that it has many small annoyances and limiations compare to other developmental platforms : )
