Newbies fl8rmaus Posted May 26, 2004 Newbies Posted May 26, 2004 I remember reading a while ago (or at least I think I do...) that one could write scripts for buttons that could delete or duplicate files, and that these could be used instead of the menu buttons in FileMaker. When I read this, I got the impression that I could set up accounts/passwords for my users and set them up so that the delete and duplicate menu buttons would be greyed out and therefore they would be forced to always use my delete and duplicate buttons. I'm doing this becuase I have found that some of my users like to duplicate records to save time. I have created some nice scripts so that when they do this, some important fields will get cleared and updated. I also found out recently that (shock, horror) sometimes they delete records in error. So I have a script to back up the file and give them a very stern "are you sure" mesg before deleting it for real. But when I set up a password to take away the functionality of the FileMaker menu buttons, they also lose the ability to delete and duplicate via a script! I am missing something. Either my script isn't so good (very possible, I am doing this very very part time along with many other tasks in my job) or I'm missing something about setting up passwords. Could I please have some tips or suggestions? Hopefully the answer will be very obvious to you guys. Thanks! M
Keith LaMarre Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 you're missing something when setting up passwords - there is an area in there that says "Available Menu Commands" where you can choose "Normal", "Editing Only" or "None". (this is separate from the ability to add or delete records) Be aware, however, that choosing Editing or none will make it IMPERATIVE that the things you want to do (including Finding, Printing, Creating and Deleting records) is available as buttons. there may be other solutions as well - this is the FileMaker way. To see what will happen, create a new db and add one field - add a password such as admin with all privileges, add one "edit" with edit menu only, and "none" with no menus. Sign in with the last two to see what will happen. Good Luck
Newbies fl8rmaus Posted May 28, 2004 Author Newbies Posted May 28, 2004 Ah, I knew there was something simple that I just didn't "get." My scripts now work as they were intended! Now I just need to add a "find" script and we're all set. Thanks a lot! M
