does "set next serial number" work in 5.0 bound solutions?

if it does my life just got a whole lot easier. this new script step works great, making the FM auto-increment serial numbers finally useable, but i don't know if it will work once we bind under developer 5.0. we would happily bind under developer 5.5 if we could! why is it that we can only get 5.5 client and server but we have to bind under 5.0 ?
