When you change the name of the file to the which one other you're opening is related, it will show you the classic window that FM couldn't find the file "x". So you can browse and point FM to the new named file. But in FM7 he won't remember the new named and will ask you again about the old one, FM7 doesn't update the relationship, unless you don't enter the File references as administrator and point it from the inside to the new named. This is that good, it lacks you some how the possibility of renaiming the files. I have one database in the which the person that works with always renames the files after the month. Now he can't do it anymore since he doesn't have administrator rights to update the relationship, and thus it is anoying to browse every time you open the file and point FM7 to the right file. Any idea, or experience like this? It also won't update the scripts you execute from a related file if it is renamed. It will show you: Perform script <unknown>.

Hello Toni,

FileMaker 7 allows you to directly access and manipulate file references via the new Define> File References command on the File menu.

One solution, therefore, would be to go into the File References dialog and enter a list of possible file names that anticipate the names that the file will be changed to at the end of each month. You could enter a couple of dozen alternative names for the comeing couple of years. Then provided a naming convention is followed, the files will always open automatically because they will be listed as options in the reference definitions.

Note that FileMaker will open the first file on the references list that it is able to locate, so the order that the names are entered will determine which file opens if more than one of the listed file names is present.
