abcameo Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I just bought 6.0 and recieved it today. I am trying to set up an inventory tracking/database for an internet site I am in the process of starting up. The help files are pretty scant. When I called to enquire whether the product would support what I need to do, the tech told me, "absolutely," but I can't figure out how! I would like to enter my items and have an alpha-numeric serial number assigned in sequential and alphabetical order. I make jewelry, so I would need the inventory, for instance, to read like this so that I can place the serial number into a web shopping cart later on: Item 1: AmyGF 1001 (Amethyst Gold-filled number 1001) - Serial #AMYGF1001 Item 2: AmySS 1002 (Amethyst Sterling number 1002) - Serial # AMYSS1002 I would ideally like to have a database like this, sortable by date entered, Type of Stone (have them from A-Z) and Sequential numbers for each. I set up the basic layout format and went into Define Fields and selected Auto enter Serial, next value 1001 increment 1. When I went back and entered my first 2 items, I entered 1000 in the first one, but the serial numbers did not come up automatically for the second record. There was no option for the ALPHA-NUMERIC combination kind of serial number I want to assign. Can someone please advise (1) how do I set up the form to assign the next sequential number and (2) how do I set up the combination of AMYGF plus the serial number and get it to input the next number automatically? Thank you for any advice you can offer. Amy
RalphL Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I did a search of the FileMaker web site Tech Info on the subject of "Serial Numbers". The following articles may help you. 104412, 104058, 104315 & 013588. http://www.filemaker.com/ti/104412.html is the address for the first. change the number for the others.
abcameo Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 Thank you for taking the time and effort to research the answer for me, Ralph. I just ordered "Learn Filemaker Pro 6" because I can see the program's help menu vaguely states objectives you can achieve with no real detailed explanations or samples. Like I'm interested in printing out labels. It says I can do it, but never fully tells me how or if there's a generic template I can us--although it alludes to one. You would think they would include some generic templates for labels and envelopes which you can alter if necessary. The help file sounds like they provide this, but don't tell you where it's located or how to find it...just vague references with no solid solutions. I hope the book arrives quickly because I'm trying to set up this inventory database and use it as a backbone of my internet business. Amy
RalphL Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 You might want to take a look at Special Edition Using FileMaker Pro 5 by Rich Coulombre. I see it advertised used at Amazon for $8.40.
