Hi all,

I am new to Filemaker Pro and am quite familiar with Microsoft Access. I have been developing a database recently which I now plan to be able to sell or giveaway on the internet. Ideally I want it to be a standalone file (exe) which can interrogate a database and make updates as per the users preferences. For example, I want the user to be able to create a list of their own team members for their development projects. I want each to have an executable file on their computers.

Would Filemaker Pro Developer 7 be the right software for me to create executables?

Thanks in advance!

Nikhil

The standalone executables that are created are not networkable. (they can only work with local database bound to the .exe) If you want the application to update a centrally hosted database, then Filemaker Pro needs to be installed on each client computer. You could use the standalone runtime to export modified data to another fp7 file, then import the changes to another runtime. If you really want users to be able to update a central database without buying filemaker pro, consider web publishing. If it's only for a few users, you could just use instant web publishing.

Hi Reed,

Thanks for your reply. The database would be just for that user and not networked. I just want users to be able to update their own database on their computer. So in that case I could use Filemake Developer 7 then as the user could run the executable, update the database and store it locally on their own machine?

Thanks again

Yes, this should work. The executable file size is rather large in FM7 though, something like 20MB for the runtime alone. The runtime part is much smaller in older versions.

One of the things I like about Developer 6 vs Developer 7 is that 6 will work with Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP. So you have a lot of users with older boxes that may be interested in your product. Developer 7 only is designated for Windows 2000 and XP.
