Dave Nathanson Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Hi, I'm feeling the heat. We've got a problem. I have to solve it. 2 months ago we upgraded from FMPS3 to FMPS5.5 & all 40 users are now using FMP6 on Mac OS 9. 1 or 9.22. Server is a dedicated G4/466, 256MB ram, 100bt, Mac OS 9.1. 35 files, largest file is 550 MB & was originally made in FMP2. That db has over 400 fields, and dozens of layouts, as do 2 other db files. Please don't even consider telling me to manually recreate those files from scratch, it would take all year. In all the years we had FMP Server 3.x & FMP 4.1, we never got a server crash. Only when power failed did it ever stop. 2 weeks ago, we had a terrible server crash. It took many hours just to get past the post crash consistency checking. I was careful to not reuse the crashed files. I used a clone file from the prior day back up & imported all data into it. It was midnight before I got the server back online. Today the FMPS 5.5 server crashed again. The server looks ok, but the click is stopped, and the mouse moves, but can't click anything. Force Quit brings up the dialog box, but can't actually force quit anything. Have to use the restart button on the front of the mac. i don't want to lose another 12 hours, and we have a back up from 90 minutes ago, so I quickly revert to that. The users will have to re-enter the past 90 minutes of work, and I will then have to comb through the 35 related files looking for records that are linked improperly. We're all VERY CONCERNED that this is now 2 major FMP Server crashes in 2 weeks, compared with none in 6 years of FMP Server 3.x. Almost everything is the same, except the FileMaker software. What can I do? Help! Dave Nathanson Mac Medix
stanley Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Dave: You don't say what the old server was, or exactly what OS your server is running on. Make sure you've got all the FMS upgrades and all the OS upgrades. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago when I upgraded a client's server from Mac OS 8.6 to 9.1... All stability vanished, and I ended up putting 8.6 back on the machine. Never crashes. -Stanley
Vaughan Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 The last patch of FMS 5.5 is rock solid on MacOS X. Your G4 server should be able to run 10.2.8 without problems. I found FMS 5.5 worked well on 10.1.5 as well.
